Le Mans Virgin (Sort of...)

Hi All
I mentioned Le Mans to my partner some months ago, then promptly forgot about it. She has just reminded me, and asked if it was on or not.
I should explain that she is generally supportive of my interest in motors but is not the world's greatest petrolhead.
I have been once before, a good few years back, with a group, so have given her some idea of what she would be letting herself in for, but am slightly unsure about going "on our own" and not knowing anyone there (until we get there..) and also not knowing much about the campsites.
My initial plan is for us to cross Dover-Boulogne on Thu 12 Jun return late Mon 16 Jun. Was thinking about Houx but, judging from many posts, we'll struggle to get tickets.
As for the rest of it, what do people do for tickets - do you get grandstand tickets or just general enclosure.
Also, once you've parked up in a camping area, what's it like to get you car out again say, for going into town or to go shopping for food?

Give Andy a ring at Team Langoustine.
He knows a lot about the place and will give you impartial advise.
What ever you may want, TL seem to be able to sort it.
I did just that and after a couple of weeks of investigating I went back to them and bought all my grandstand and camping + crossings.
There is however a wealth of knowledge on this site, but you may have to go to an agent this late in the day and would recommend the above.

Team Langoustine are very good, I have bought my entrance/grandstand tickets from them for the last couple of years.
This year I have opted to camp in the Pistonheads/White rabbit racing area. As I'm going with the wife it is worth it just for the dedicated toilets and showers (not to mention the bar
).

Get youself booked in the Team Langoustine campsite with a couple of ACO Grandstand seats. There's a few of us going from Hampshire (3 TVR's, a Corvette and a Jag XKS), all couples who will make you both very welcome!
If that's already sold out, try the Houx or the Houx Annexe through TL. Granstand seats are recommended.
Let us know how you get on.

Not a problem getting out for food. If you want to go into town, you can get a tram from Tetre Rouge (next to the Team Langoustine campsite) into Le Mans.

Thanks for the replies - when I went in 2000, I didn't pay any attention to much on the organisational site, as I was just filling an empty seat in someone else's car. Will have a good look around this year, with an eye to future attendences.
TL campsite is sold out, so no go there.
Have had a look at the thread on WRR - Oh Dear, but there's a lot of vitriol running around loose...
Will see what I can do re Channel crossings before I try to sort out anything else.
Will probably pass on grandstand tickets this year, but think about it for the future.
I realise that I am a wee bit late on getting this squared away, so am prepared for not getting first (or even second) choices in what I want - will know better in future...
Is there any consensus on what route people are taking? As I will most likely be crossing over from Dover, I was thinking of the more classic route down through Rouen, rather than the new (to me!) autoroute (of which some parts had just opened last time I was there, in the rain...)?

The n138 from Rouen down is the only way to go, Autoroute? Soulless roads are plentiful in the UK why pay for the privelege?
I don't know if it was timing or what, but last year was my first and hardly saw anyone else going to LM on the N138. The weather can't have helped I suppose, but there was loads of nice machinery around on the ferry and the early petrol stations. 
There was a group of Astons that were seriously gunning it, apart from the last memeber in their group who looked like the last thing he wanted to do was overtake in the rain.

If you having trouble with Dover-Calais crossings, try speedferries from dover-Bologne, as of end of last week they still had spaces on the thursday and the monday.
As for camping would definately recommend WRR but if its a bit too much you can get passes for the other site on somewhere like Ebay, although you will pay over face price!
As for tickets, general enclosure are fine as they allow you to enter various areas through out the race and get some excellent views. Have never known these to sell out so if all else fails get them at the gate for a max of 62 euros each.
