Shocks

Does anyone else know what other cars have the same shocks (dimensions etc) as our S's?

Whilst unlikey, I know, I'd like to keep on the look out for a a set that has been fitted and taken off without much use. hoping to broaden my search with this info and get a bargain??

Is the V8 the same as the V6? If so, mine will be available soon if you want them? Original Avo's from the factory - a good 15 years old by now mind you....

The idea is to try and save a bit off list price by getting a set that are only just second hand, like yours mine have been on since new-although they have stood the test of time well they will be due soon for changing.

BTW-what are you going to change them for and how much did they cost if you dont mind me asking?

I've a set of shiny new Gaz Golds which came from Derek and co at Absolutely Shocks

Hoping for a huge transformation as I've also fitted the rose arb jointed droplinks, four new boots and its off for alignment in a couple of weeks.

That sounds like a plan. Mine rides well, but the weight transfer on turn in isn't exactly huried, I was thinking about doing something similar.

It'll hopefully all be finished by mid-April and I can finally get back out on the road again so you're welcome to go for a spin.

I swapped mine at the weekend for a new set of Gaz shocks and springs - just under £500 all in including delivery and VAT. The results are brilliant - the car rides as well as it ever did but the handling is superb. I've still got to tinker with the fine adjustment but I'm very pleased so far. The whole thing is highly recommended.

The rears were a pig to get off though....

Sounds good, I assume they are Gaz Nickel?

They are just the kit from Absolutely Shocks for the S Series - I think they are the nickel - and certainly aren't the gold shocks.

The guy from Absolutely Shocks appears very knowledgeable and was able to offer advice about the right sring rates for me. I asked for a fast road setup without compromising ride quality. I think the sring rates for my car are 350lb on the fronts and 200 on the rear.

I also got a new bolt kit from Steve Heath engineering at the same time as the shock/spring kits don't come with new bolts. New bolts all round were less thatn £16 inc. carriage.

IIRC it was a lot more than 200lb on the rear.

How different are those to standard? I'm a little wary of comprimising the ride quality, but currently the car is significantly softer than many of the sportscars I've driven. There again, it's also a lot better mannered on bumpy, rutted b-roads...

I have to bring this topic back to the original point....across the S range there are 5 different rear swing arm pick-up points and this then limits swapping around OE shocks (Koni) with OE spring set (but as the thread points out not used ride height adjustable). Just my thoughts.

I cant imagine using the word 'standard' about the suspension as there were factory upgrades installed in '89 and '92.

In any case, the main problem was the rear that always seemed undersprung with not enough compression damping. The new set up is honestly a huge improvement without being over-hard. For example, the set-up on my Lotus Esprit is noticeable harder (and better controlled).

There are those who have gone with even harder springs with these shocks (around 500lb); maybe OK for for a trackday/roadcar but a little too firm for my liking...

I've just taken a break from fitting my kitchen to pop into the garage and I have 350lb front springs and 275lb on the rears. You could go stiffer but as I said I didn't want to compromise the ride comfort - with the set up indicated above, the handling is superb - not too jiggly over the bumpy stuff but very controlled. Highly recommended for the road and probably ok for some track work. I've only got 20/45 clicks wound into the shocks at the moment. So there's some further stiffness there if needed/desired.
