I'm new to pistonheads, but I remember reading somewhere that Cerberas with sports exhausts can be too loud for some trackdays and I'm trying to organise one for myself. Anyone got any useful info ? or help with how I can get it tested for Db level ?

With a DB meter some of the track day companies will hire you one for a pre track day test

The first thing to do is to find out what the noise limit is going to be and how it is to be tested.

Normal test seems to be 4500 rpm then take a measurment 0.5 Metres and 45 degrees from the exhaust.

I had my 4.2 at Castle Combe at the end of June. Limit was 100dB and my car registered 118dB. I put in a set of Track Day inserts to the tail pipes and the value dropped to 106dB. I then fitted a set of Merlin external silencers and the measurment was ~99dB. Just made it.

It was really annoying because I had been to the dealer the week before and had the car measured on their dB meter @96dB with the inserts and 106 without. Trouble is the measurement was done at 3000rpm and 1 metre from the tail pipes.

Still trying to work out why it measures 118dB with a standard box anyway.

There's a noise FAQ on my website. Cheapest noise meter is a Tandy unit for about £30 and it is pretty good. I use it to check my cars. My old Cerbera had the 4.5 rear section fitted and it was hitting 110db at times and I had to use inserts to get the noise down. The big problem is that the tests are done at various rev limits and can vary by as much as 3-4 db and the location. Having a car up close can add a few dB.

Mine 'passed' @ the TVRCC Snetterton do this year...although nobody poked a meter @ the car I did test it before, a 4.5 with sports exhausts was running @ about 110 dba 1m from the rear (in a pub car park)

I found that a pair of 5 inch supertrapps let me take my 4.5 around every quiet circuit in the UK. It is also possible to remove/add elements to tailor the noise reduction. Demon Tweaks sell them.

However last year Joolz fitted some permenant (I am old and need a quiet drive too) intermediate free flow silencers. Cerbera now only needs the supertrapps for Thruxton.

I've also just had Joolz's silencers fitted and was tested at Goodwood yesterday at 95dB.

How did you get to drive Thruxton? The only company I have ever seen offer a Thruxton track day is Gold Track and it was by invitation only.

A cerbera at thruxton would be huge fun - its a proper power circuit.
