smg II m3 only?

E46 325 & 330 models (and Z4 2.5/3.0) could be specified with a simpler version correctly called SMMG Gearbox though rare

Yup, 330i and 325i (along with the Z4s) came with the earlier SMG gearbox - no-where near as good as the SMG2 box found in the M3.

Not sure, it was very rare to find one. I assume from launch of the 325i/330i (c.2001) to the end.

The SMMG gearbox is awful though, unless you're at ten tenths the whole time (i.e. track day).
And when you consider how good the auto is on a 330i (E46) and how good the manual is, i see little point in the SMMG.

I think 325/330s came with SSG, although many sellers seem to say they're SMG in the ads.
When researching buying my 330 years ago, I couldn't find onepositive comment about the SSG.
Apparently it is very probelematic.

The sequential available on the E46 was indeed SSG, and was by all accounts quite sloppy.

The transmission available on pre-facelift Z4 2.5i and 3.0i's was SMG (specifically H-SMG), and it's pretty good in my experience.

The gearbox in 325 and 330's is SSG not SMMG and was also available on the Z4, it came with the launch of the Clubsport model which was 2002 until the death of the E46 coupe.

SMGII was the gearbox fitted in E46 M3 only.
