Camera Face Flash
Discussion
Were there lines on the other side of the road. If so you've just got in the beam pattern and have set it off. If there are no lines on your side of the road then it is not calibrated for your side of the road and you should not hear anything further.
Having said all this I would wait for one of our resident BiB to confirm the overall situation, as I may be talking bolloc4s which is not unknown

I had this happen to me three weeks ago. It was a Gatso camera on the other side of the road, there were lines on both sides of the road for both cameras on that stretch, I got through my camera (my side of the road) without a problem but 100 yards or so later the camera on the other side of the road flashed me. I have yet to hear anything, but I have always thought that Gatso cameras (as opposed to truvelo) could only take photos from the rear?
Anyone know the answer?

I think this has been covered many times on here, but basically GATSO cameras are perfectly capable of snapping you from in front, but they are simply not used this way in the UK.
The GATSO radar doesn't care which way you are going and will snap drivers coming towards it if you come within its range (i.e. wrong side of the road and/or narrow road).
Truvelo will get you from in front, but uses an IR flash so as not to blind you.

So I can put little heating elements in my numberplate to make it look like a different plate to IR cameras?
Or take the metallic heat-reflecting clingfilm out of my 206 windscreen and put it on my numberplate!
Neither idea technically changes the number plate for the purposes of visual sighting....
Sure it's been covered before!

There are forward flashing cameras about, they used a closed loop sensor in the road just in front of the camera 2 sets of horizontal black double lines just behind 3 white painted lines. Often these cameras are situated in front of Schools.
These are the sensors.
Here is there usual distance from a forward flasher Gatso.

If you can set off a camera that is intended only for rear-flashing (oooh, sounds rude), then DO SO. You can't be done for it, and it wastes film/time. There's one in Dorset that must have over 100 pics of me...
( do hear tell of bikers that try for the biggest "wheelie" picture on such cameras. Totally irresponsible, but...

the ones on southend front only take photo's on the same side of the road as the camera.
come to think of it,i'm sure they are all like that.
always remember to watch out on the a127 as you are coming into southend for a kojak with a kodak at just past rayleigh wier,at the bmw dealer between the merc garage and hendy ford.........oh,and the red light camera's and the 4 gatso's between the 40mph restriction at eastwood and the bell pub.

Please don't listen to anyone (even BiB) who tells you you're safe if you're flashed by a Gatso on the other side of a single carriageway while driving towards it.
My girlfriend was flashed at night in these exact circumstances while I was a passenger. Yes, it was dangerously blinding. Yes, she received three points and a £60 fine.
The camera was a Gatso (not Truvelo). The road had markings painted on it on both sides of the carriageway.

Sorry Spoonman, but due to the laws of physics you cannot be done when approaching a camera in the wrong way to which it has been calibrated
Doppler radar gives a different speed for traffic that is receeding or approaching the camera due to
1) The angle of measurement
2) How doppler radar works (see section 2 of the ACPO guidelines below)
Consequently a switch must be operated in any of the radar devices to idicate which type of traffic is being measured.
If you don't believe me, read the ACPO guidelines on camera operation at www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/acpo.htm - check out the roadside radar section in section 13.
End result is that you should have asked for the appropiate calibration certificate for the Gatso that flashed you indicating it had been calibrated (see www.speed-trap.co.uk/Accused_Home/How_it_Works/How_it_works_Home.htm for more details).
End result is that either your girlfriend was done by a Truevelo (which are not radar based) or if it really was a GATSLO then she accepted points on her license when there was no case to bring.

Joust, doesn't this first point of yours say it all? Maybe this particular Gatso (it was a Gatso; it had the word Gatso on it) was calibrated to record oncoming vehicles. Maybe many others are also calibrated this way.
It happened over a year ago now, and my girlfriend returned the NIP with a letter asking for a calibration certificate. But, being as she didn't fancy losing a day's pay to appear in court, she didn't pursue it any further.
When all's said and done, all I'm doing is reporting the facts: you can be prosecuted for speeding through a Gatso on the opposite side of the road.
If people want to ignore this advice, it's fine by me. On your licence be it. But I'd rather there were fewer speeding fines handed out from these one-lens bandits., and a little less money in the pockets of cash-grabbing plod.

I think we - BiB's - dealt with this at length before Spoonman, on Flashers original thread of a few weeks ago.

Tivster. As far as I know, I've never discussed any topic with you...
But, whatever. The fact remains people are still listening to spurious information and passing it on to other PHers, who may then feel safe from prosecution in such circumstances.
There's no doubt this kind of Gatso is a rarity – but they ARE out there, regardless of what 'inside information' anyone has to hand.
And I'd prefer it if PHers weren't misled.

I believe all of **999** did
And this is not spurious information. The only forward firing Gatso's I know about are inductive/Piezocrystalline loop activated and tend to be linked as Red light enforcement cameras.
As others have already outlined, the normal Gatso radar unit can not be set to detect in both directions i.e. it can only be set to detect vehicles approaching or moving away from the unit. It's 'preferred' application is to deal with vehicles moving away from it as the flash may cause distraction.
If indeed this was a radar Gatso then your girfriend was unfortunate, but is the only case I've ever come across.
So it's fair to say that PH'er's are not being misled and judging by the responses on this thread from non-BiB's, I think you'll agree that it is really not an issue to be concerned over.
Cheers
Tivster
