Ive had the car for 2 years now and the steering has always felt stiff it is power assisted.
The wheel is heavy when trying to park and i have to feed the wheel when exiting corners.
As i have'nt driven any others i can't compare.
I have just replaced the ujs a bit better but still not happy with it.
Can the pump where out or is it a case it works or it does'nt.
The bible says the P.A.S is excellent well it is'nt in mine it's as if i have'nt got it.
Any tips anyone?
Thanks,

Probably a good idea to check the P A S fluid level first

The filter in the resevoir may be choked(and restricting the supply to the pump) take the res off and flush it out with carb cleaner/jizer or similar(you cannot actually remove the filter assy built inside)then renew the old fluid with new, this is not a def cure for your fault but its very cheap and i have cured many a PAS problem by doing this and its usually under assistance that is the fault(like clutch fluid no ones pays it any attention until it creates a fault)also check the supply pipes(low pressure)are not kinked or collapsed, good luckthumbup

Try turning the steering without the engine running and then try is with it running.

If the PAS is working you WILL notice the difference wink

I have just removed the pipe from the rack to the tank due to a leak somewhere the fluid that came out was a dark brown colour should this not be Red.

What and how much fluid is used.

How do you completely drain the system.

I took advantage of the extra daylightsmile and replaced the fluid.
Don't know how to drain completly but removed the resivour and low pressure pipe to remove as much as i could.
Mine was brown so i assume quite old.
Replaced with new just short of a litre.
100% better not in the league of my A6 but a huge improvement.
Thanks for the help guys.

Spot onthumbupDexron 2 is fine in this system dexron 3 is just higher spec(not neccesary for PAS)its designed for later spec auto trans units.

Sorry, should have made my self clear, you can use Dexron 3 in PAS but its a bit overkill, clean fresh Dexron 2 changed every couple of years or so is the best you can do.

LR have a pretty anal procedure about priming the pump after drain/refill BTW. Maybe because they have to strip the viscous fan to change the pump if they cook it hehe

IIRC few cranks, stop, top up... repeat until level maintained, then start bleeding rack sequence.

I took your advice and removed the bowl emptied it out and rinsed well with jizer then refilled.
The old stuff was brown emptied into a takeaway tray and moved my finger around in the oil leaving a gritty trail.
Once i filled it up started the engine up with the cap off and saw the liquid start frothing and turning colour.
So there must still be crappy oil in there how many times do you suggest i do this or is there a better way of flushing it out.
Took the car out today and steering much better maybe i can get it even better?
Thanks Paul

Yes Animal well done(a very neglected part of the car)the resevoir is best flushed out with paint thinners or brake cleaner(warning,,,,res off the car please)keep filling half way then shaking repeat this until the fluid runs clear then blow out with an airline or just let to dry naturally, the important bit is that all the thinners as evaporated(most important that last bit)do not let thinners come into contact with the inner workings off the system or you will end up with o,ring seals like used condoms yikes
