I've just fitted the lovely MOG carbon seats and apart from some minor things which I'm adapting to all is well.

There is one concern - the enhanced sides of the seat have moved my knees closer to the steering column and hence towards the ignition barrell. I've removed all non car keys from my key ring however I am still slightly concerned that the ignition key might have a go at me if I crash.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could convert the car to not needing an ignition key thus:
Walk up to car, unlock with remote, press a start button in conjunction with something else (e.g clutch and another button - to prevent either acidental ignition or children messing about) or maybe there is a switch somewhere to kill the ignition circuit?

1) is this possible?
2) has it been done - can I buy a kit?
3) what would it do to the insurance?

Many thanks

Miles

So... what you want to do is let anyone be able to start your car without the keys?

Surely this will severely affect your insurance premium? Modifying with the car's key/alarm etc?

My knees are up round the ignition key in both my road cars. All I've done is strip the key fob down so that there's nothing dangling to get in the way. I find otherwise my knee gets caught when going for the brake.

Worth a try first?

Miles,

Several car security firms can do a system as you described. Worth speaking to a local fitter.

I would suggest you move the seat...

ignoring the key's problem, just think of your leggs in an acident....

I wouldn't mind betting the OP's arms are already stretched out straight if it's an Elise we're talking about wink

That's what I have. Works a treat and very easy to fit.

Hi

Maybe something like this? Not sure what it does to the insurance though.

I've just had a spacer fitted and it's great, along with the seat (as far back and down as we can get it at the moment), new seat and harness it has really changed the "hanging on" feeling when driving the car smile Being 6'4"(ish) it's hard not to drive with my knees around the steering column and I've already taken all the non lotus keys off the key ring - all that's left is the key, a ring and the alarm however I' still worried that if i do crash it will result in the key being inserted into the inside of my right knee which I can't see being a lot of fun - hence the question.

Any pointers as to what they call it as there is a world of products and pain out there in that market smile?

Thanks

Sort of - I want to be able to start the car without the key in the existing ignition however I want to protect the safety and security of the car in some way.

Keyless go is an extra-cost option on my Clifford system I think and it's not a particularly flash system (a G5 Concept 650 it says here). Don't know what it would cost, but it's listed in the manual as an option. Security shouldn't be an issue as it will be secured in the same way as the immobiliser I guess.

Is that keyless go or remote start? I suspect there is a difference as I understood (last time I looked at this 2 years ago) that remote start allows the engine to start with all the doors locked and alarmed, then when you disarm the car it switches off and you go through the normal start with a key etc... Mind you 6 months is a long time in these things and I'm out of touch now smile

Just remote starting listed, but it has loads programmable functions so I would have thought a specialist could set it up to start and run from just the fob if you wanted it to. I'm just guessing, but it's worth asking. It's not like the elise has central locking so the two programs shouldn't be very different!

Never knew that about S2s - so that's where the extra weight comes from!

Forgive me if I am being stupid, BUT

I dont think the lotus keys are clever, in that they don't have any electronic do dahs in them that would make this a bad idea.

Why dont you just bend the key?
Could you not hack the key up a bit to make it less dangerous shape, maybe mould it into some soft rubber or something? Would be a lot easier than faffing about with all the electronics, and if you do it right it should be quite effective, no?
