Guys,

A mate of mine has informed me that he is looking into getting an evo 5, and has a budget of upto 7k.

However, we have a bit of a difference of opinion- he will be doing circa 20k miles a year which for starters would mean that the car would need (i think) about 4 services @ 4500 miles each. He thinks that general costs wont be too sky high, whereas im a bit more sceptical. Obviously, the majority of those miles will be done on a commute on mway and dual carrigeway, which should help with fuel consumption and wear and tear on engine etc. Im with him on general consumables like tyres and brakes in that these are average costs for essential items anyway, but what about stuff like clutches and 'boxes? With a sensible right foot, are these likely to last as long as on other cars?

A quick look on lancer register gives an indication of running costs, but i was wondering if theres anyone on here who has an early evo (esp a 5) and uses it for these kind of miles?

Id love to think its not beyond the realms of possibility (without having to sell a kidney) but im not so sure..

Ta!

i own a 6 which is pretty much the same as a 5. running costs are not too high if they look after it and he buys a well looked after and serviced car. fuel he needs to expect around 20mpg but will get more if he sits at around 55-60 on motorways off boost (will never catch on). 4500 miles is only an ayc service which at a dealer i think is £150 but not 100% sure yet even though mine is about to need doing for the first time. 9000 miles for a regular servicing which you can get done at not to bad a price at a specialist.
as for the clutch, gearbox etc i have had no problems at all with mine and i think there as reliable as anything else when the car is driven sensibaly. play with the car on a track or where ever then it will bring the life down and possible come into a problem catagory but thats the same as anything else.
anyway hope this helps but sign up the to lancer register (like i am) and ask some questions on there forums. very helpful and there is loads and loads of info on there

Thanks for that Paul- in this case im happy to have been proved wrong!

I hadnt realised that the 4500mile service was for the AYC. Have downloaded the buyers guide off the forum now too.

  • goes off and wanders if an evo would be a good replacement for his ST.....*
