The airbag light (and the word AIRBAG on the odometer) have started coming on about 5 seconds after the ignition is turned on in my car. It's a 1995 model. Is there a common cause for this problem? Thanks

I have that on my XKR, it turns out to be the Steering Cassette behind the steering wheel, on the XKR it is part number LJR 6470 CA.

I have the part, just got to change it over now.

Cool, cheers. Did you have to buy it from a dealer? What was the cost? Thanks

Guys, just a friendly reminder, don't forget to disconnect the battery and let the capacitors in the system discharge before doing any airbag work (2 minutes should do it).

They can kill.

Couple more questions whilst I'm on the topic - I just bought the car last week on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

Think it was a bit of a bargain myself, but I would do really!!!

It is not clear that the car has been serviced in a fair while - and I'm planning to drive it to Le Mans in the summer so I need it to be as reliable as possible. I've changed the air filter plus oil & filter (all bloody filthy). I'm also going to change the spark plugs, fuel filter, gearbox and diff oils.

Does anyone know the service intervals for the diff, gearbox and supercharger? I'm told the supercharger takes Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 but I don't know how much, and how to change it. Anyone here done the job themselves?

Thanks

Diff and Gearbox are seeled for life, that is untill they go BANG.
Change the oil about 80,000 miles 100,000 at most.
Supercharger, I dont think is a service item

I see you got the car from Reading, I take it you are in this area.
If so give Tom at TLC Jags a ring 0118-973-7779
Top bloke specialist in Jaguars, say I gave you his number

There was an article on changing the gearbox oil and filter on the XJR in one of the last JEC Magazines.

I'm actually from North London rather than Reading, I just saw how little the car was going for and took a gamble to get it so cheap... I thought it would sell for much closer to £3k but I'm not complaining.

I'll have a look into that membership. Seems worthwhile for the discounts etc.

I know most manufacturers these days tend not to specify fluid changes for the transmission but I think this is probably based on the expectation that most people will throw cars away after 7-10 years if anything expesnive breaks on them... shame. I noticed that you can get a gearbox filter kit for them too:

http://www.britishparts.co.uk/.sc/ms/dd/ee/3122/FI...

So I thought people must change the fluid, I just wasn't sure how often. I don't think my car has had it done recently if ever, so probably worth doing at the same time as the diff oil.

I'm planning on changing my X 308 gearbox and 'diff oil every 30k or so - which are roughly the service intervals for the previous model.

I take the view it can't do any harm and will work out far cheaper than replacing components if they degenerate through lubrication failure.

You might want to consider changing the engine oil and filter more often than every 10k too.

IMO Jaguar's servicing requirements for the X308 are based more on reducing the perceived cost of ownership, rather than a genuine desire to make sure it lasts and performs well for as long as possible.

Ah.. Just found my glasses now.. getmecoat

If it's a 1996 - not an 1998 as I thought I read - car it'll be the X300, which if I remember should have gearbox and 'diff oil changes as part of the normal service schedule at 30k intervals. If you're handy with spanners you should be able to do this easily yourself rather than paying a garage to do the work for you, both gearbox and 'diff oil changes are a far easier job on the X300 than the X308.

If you're in north London and need a good independent Jaguar specalist give Wyn Thomas in Epping a call. 01992 578555 - Ask for Mike.
