Anyone had this before? When braking there is a on/off grating noise in time with speed of rotation of wheels that seems to be coming from OS rear wheel/brakes/driveshaft? Would appreciate advice coz I want to check I'm doing no damage but also want to mend before Goodwood run. Is it something to do with handbrake mech rubbing on disc. The noise doesnt change if braking hard or gently.

I think thats enough of the symtoms. Is the doctor in?

My 1st thought would be to check the pads incase you're down to metal.

This is a speedy service! clap Good point Smokin I will check them tonight. Itsayellow, would I feel the warping during heavy braking coz they feel perfect and very effective?

This noise has a metallic rattly sound. I jacked up the rears at the weekend and ran it in gear to get the wheels spinning then applied the brakes but there was no noise. I guess the compression of the suspension has somthing to do with changing the source of the noise. Baffling scratchchin

In which case probably not a warped disc. How about a broken o very worn out pad? Have you had the wheel off and had a good look over it?

Just thinking about the diff bushes thread - could a drive shaft be almost touching summat, and makes contact when braking? I guess that means getting underneath with a torch (with weight on the wheels).

Not sure if this is helpful, but I had a similar problem on another car and it was caused by a build up of pad material on the rear discs - cleaning discs and minor adjustments to the rear calipers cured it.

An alternative fix suggested to me at the time was to find a big empty space, drive at 10-20 mph and (lightly) apply the handbrake (not locking the wheels) to "clean" the discs - never tried it myself, but it kind of sounded sensible at the time.

Could it also be a wheel bearing?

This is kind of what I've thought but I'm gonna need it up on a ramp for that.. or go on a diet. I'll def check the pads first though. Thanks for your advice everyone and looking forward to meeting some of you on the Goodwood run.... hoping its not too serious. driving

Interesting idea ... shame the works car park is full could finish with some donuts. On the wheel bearing thought, my cars done nearly 20K, surely they last more than that? Whats the average?

Just for the record, the noise turned out to be chips of rust rattling around in the rear brake drum. Solution remove caliper, tap off disc and wire brush the inside of drum. smash Thanks for all the advice luckily not as serious as it sounded.
