As it's likely the car will have the engine out soon anyway, I might get a new cam to get some more power out of it - any recommendations?

I think Charlie recommended one a while back but I can't remember what it was.

Also does changing the cam require a remap/new ECU and are there kits that include both?

thanks smile

hi ive just had fitted a mc1 cam ,which is very smooth fantastic for the road ...i allso had a new power boost valve fitted ,this means the fuel presure can be tweeked to allow the correct air fuel mixture when you boot it .i went for carbon trumpets and the a.c.t smooth bore air intake and k&n air filter. i can`t believe the difference, its a nice drive .the trouble with the high lift cams they do not iddle well and theres no power from the start only mid range and high range .my car ripps from start and my 0 to 60 times are below 4.5 seconds .i kept the orig chip and used the new presure regulater(power boost valve) to make up the diffrence . v8 developments did the work and i am very happy with the job ..

Did V8 Deveolpments recommend the power boost valve over a standard variable pressure regulator ? I tried one, but I lost 2-3 mpg and no extra performance. The ECU has built in fuel enrichment, and this type of regulator simply confuses the issue IMHO.

no ,i did some research and v8 developments said it was another way of getting over the problem,.these guys have been working on these engines for years and they know there stuff .the extra fuel is used because it is needed and keeps a 87%air 13% fuel when you you put your foot down hard. the car does not use any more fuel when driving gentle .i for got to say that the guage which comes with the regulator is is a waste of time they have special equiptment.i put £40 in and drove it like a mad man and got 180 miles i dont know if that is the norm

i have just ordered an mc1 and they never mentioned this particular upgrade. can you explain what the downside of the standard regulator is? bad economy?

I dont doubt V8 devloplments for one moment, and I agree about the A/F ratio, and the ability to alter the final pressure and fueling. The bit Im more hesitant on is the "rising rate" (or power boost valve) bit of the regulator. I thought these units better suited to the older "flapper" type EFI on the 3.5ltr motors. A normal fuel pressure regulator will keep the fuel rail at an extact pressure above the inlet manifold pressure and is needed as otherwise when the throttle is shut, and the inlet vaccum is high, more fuel would be sucked from the nozzle tip when the injector is open, which is not want you want. As the standard regulator ovecomes this problem, the ECU fuel mapping can be set for just the right amount of fuel for any given condition. If you use a rising rate regulator, it increases the fuel pressure very rapidly as the manifold pressure increases, so effectively forcing more fuel in on top of the fuel enrichment already supplied by the ECU. It also leans the mixure off more as you close the throttle. In real terms I doubt you would notice any power increase during hard acceleration over a non rising rate unit, but I guess you could use one if the origional fuel map was underfueling the engine for peak power during acceleration, and a whole lot cheaper than a remap. Otherwise you are at risk of throwing in too much fuel (hence lower MPG) if the origional mapping is good. I also think it may confuse the ECU as it tries to control the mixture under lighter throttle openings( not that it would be enough to go into fault mode.)

V8D may have just used an adjustable fuel regulator, and tweaked the fuel pressure up overall? Many seem to be confused between variable pressure regs and rising rate regs when describing what they have/want wink

ok - where do I get an MC1 cam from, and does it come as a kit (with timing chain etc)?

and what, in a nutshell, is the difference between MC1 and a "stealth cam" I've just noticed mentioned in other threads?

cheers smile

there are a lot of threads about this - but they all end saying CALL V8 DEVELOPEMENTS. if you google you will find them.

Called V8 developments - very informative phone call that - and ordered an MC1. Seemed over the top to strip the engine to check the pistons for valve pockets in order to go for the stealth.

I have just purchased a new pocket endoscope from the USA. Sourced on Ebay delivered to the UK for £72. It has its own illumination, several attachments, including 90 degree mirror and simply connects to a laptop via the USB2 port. Vista and XP software is included etc and it records the pictures in .jpg format.

It will take a week or two to be delivered, but if and when it gets here I will take a few pics and let you know if it was worth the punt.
