On the way to work this morning the supercharger seemed to be whining a bit more than usual, then I seemed to lose top end. I was beginning to think that I'd lost another belt, but I stopped and everything was present and correct.

However the car didn't want to rev much, really. On my return to the motorway there was a muffled bump from the back, and I saw some big clods of white stuff expelled onto the road, there must have been about a bag of sugar's worth (it was a bit of a surprise to the driver following!)

It seemed to run much better after that but still not quite right. I'm wondering if the insides of the exhaust are disintegrating and clogging up somewhere, then getting shoved out as the pressure builds up? It's a 400SE style exhaust with the single exit on the driver's side, if that's relevant.

What's the construction of the back box like on the standard exhaust - is it free-flowing* ? Or will it keep blocking up until the wadding is all gone? It seemed to be getting a little strangulated again just as I got to work.

Luckily I just got a nice shinney centre box so if that'll fit with the standard stuff I'm sorted there.

  • Actually I just went out to look at it and it seems there's a centre box then just a big pipe with about 3 right angles in it. So maybe the wadding is building up on one of the right angles until it forms a plug, then popping out like a cannon!

Depends on the in and out arrangement of the pipes,if they are inline there is a good chance that it will have a straight through (but perforated) pipe that has at some point split and is allowing the "stuffing" to escape, and it can usually be repaired with another perf.pipe,if it is off set it is more problematical but what is yours ? I've just been underneath and there is only one box - the centre one.

The problem seems to be that there's a crack around the rear pipe, I thing the wadding has therefore moved inside the box. It then builds up in the long pipe to the back then blasts out!

Looks like the stainless box I bought will fit the standard rear pipe, so that will go on sometime. The current box is quite solid so I'll just weld up the pipe tomorrow and enjoy the extra decibels - the wadding depletion is making it right loud!

Not sure how the rockwool would get past the perforated pipe inside the box as its usually welded in place , have made mine so I can open up the end of the box and take rockwool out to make her slightly ..... louder !evil

I reckon the inner pipe has corroded away somewhat, allowing the wool to be blown out. It certainly put the wind up the merc driver following me much too close on the way home today. He went from 20 yards back (at 70) to about 200 yards back, after a big plume of rockwool spluttered out - it was a bit like something out of a James Bond film! Tee hee...

When some people were younger they used to put thinwall stainless pipe straight through and remove it for MOT time.Tempus smile

I think the stuffing has now gone, and I'm back to full beans.

The sound is now outrageous//awesome//embarrasing//mental//agricultural - I can't say which because it depends on the circumstance.

When it crackles and pops now on the overrun it's like a gatling gun!
