Lotus sport offer a chip upgrade for the toyota engine that apparently brings the hot cam change to 5700 as opposed to 6200. Just wondering who's experienced it and what they thought.

hmmm I was thinking of asking the same myself.

Whats the price and how does it compare to other 'non' official ecu's/remaps?

About £450, lots of people have, outcome - depends on if you like the kick from coming on to 2nd cam (which is more due to a drop in power just before, rather than a massive increase as such).

You might want to think about having the 200Bhp Ecu fitted? Does the same thing + more power hanger111 supply and fit

Does it make a big difference Boggy? What about fuel consumption , cost? Anybody here had it done?

just reading about that on hangar111, but it sounds like it's set up for cars with a sports exhaust (check) and an air filter/induction mod (. I think the one hangar 111 tested, which presumably is the car that they used to create the map, had the full quicksilver treatment and an itg induction kit on it. There's a dyno print of the results which look impressive.

What I don't know is if the car had the quicksilver manifold and sports cat (200 cell, standard is probably 400 cell). That costs over a grand on it's own. Add the titanium quicksilver silencer, itg induction kit and the ecu chip and there won't be much change from £3k. Nice to get over the magic 200bhp mark though in an Elise. And at least with an Elise there's a chance you'll notice a 10bhp gain!

I've had the ECU upgrade on my Exige & have to say that is does make the cam change smoother as it blends the cam in better & more slowly from about 5700rpm rather than it coming in with a 'bang' at 6200-6300rpm as standard.

It certainly make a difference when driving right on the cam change point.

For £450-£500 it's well worth it!!

It's designed for a very specific setup though, if you've not already got that setup, then I don't see it as being worth the money for an 11BHP gain, when it'd probably be better spent on suspension + geo and some driver training.

trouble is, if I didn't like the way the cam changes I wouldn't have bought a 111r. It may not be as fast as the Elise SC but for me, it's more fun because of the comedy top end.

I was rather hoping the ecu would exaggerate the top end, not smooth it off! But I can't imagine the difference is that great between 5700 and 6200, or is it that the slower cam lobes are past their best at 6200, and as someone mentioned the car is actually starting to slow down before the cavalry cam arrives at 6200?

The appeal for me is to be able to change from 2-3 gear without having to string the needle to the stop in an attempt at keeping it on the second cam.

lowering the change over point from 6200 to 5750 must make the car more 'drivable' on HM's highways, no?

Yes, in the standard 111R map there is a dip in torque (not sure about bhp) between around 5500 and the 6200 cam change point.... which is overcome by the Sport ECU upgrade. It aids flexibility on track, where (on the standard map) it can be frustrating when you exit a corner off cam in 3rd for example, but where selecting second is only going to give you 500 revs of acceleration before requiring a change. On the upgraded map, you can stay in third through the corner and get decent acceleration away from the apex.

However what you gain on the swings, you lose on the roundabouts as the cam change frenzy is all bit eliminated.

I was told by a friend at a franchised dealer that they check it's the correct Lotus map on the ECU so if your car is still warranted and goes to main dealer for service/repair/whatever, be very careful- I also understand they look for increased gearing on superchargers...

FWIW I have had warranty work done on my car since the SC install without any problem what so ever! Mind you the work was not engine related smile

I don`t get why this is an upgrade...??? the ecu should have been programmed like this from the start. The cost for production to do this from the outset would surely be the same as what it is to programme it how it is now? what a rip off.

I've asked this before on SELOC but to no avail so I'll try here: does anyone have dyno figures for the standard ECU and reflash version? Doesn't have to be before and after - two different cars will do as it would be interesting to see the power and torque curves.

£3k for 11bhp is madness.

The driveability improves greatly with the reflashed ECU. Worth it for that, but the other bits are just daft bling IMHO.

Indeed, if you were spending that much, you'd get a fully programmable ECU and get your own tune done and it can stop with you as you tweak bits.

Post it up again as I think someone's organising a session at Surrey Rolling Road in the next couple of weeks.

I was actually offered the upgrade when I bought my Exige from Castle last weekend. smile

If you're looking to spend say £3k on the Hangar111 upgrade, why not just go the whole hog and buy their Komotech supercharger package! wink
