I seem to remember there are a few wine buffs hang around here, I want to buy an expensive bottle of wine for a European business associate of mine, I guess it will need to be Red,

On face value it should look like a kind gesture in reality I think he probably knows a little about a good wine so would want to get something that is know as expensive by anybody with a small knowledge, In other words I want to casually take the kudos for the gift.

I guess expensive is subjective but im meaning up to about £ 100.00 a bottle

PHer Bebs is probably the man for this.

Bottles that will certainly stand out as having been a "bit generous" that I would consider purchasing are:

Henscke "Hill of Grace" Shiraz (£100 up to a very lot depending on vintage)
Penfolds "Grange" ~ £100 or so

Hmmm. If you prefer old world. Then some Gevrey Chambertin is very, very good and will look the part.

Ahhh. If you want some "rare and interesting" (and very good) New World wine I can recommend my friend David who owns Caviste.

Get some Spinefex. More like £30 a bottle IIRC but will blow your mates socks off and it isn't findable in any of the usual sources...

A flagship wine would be impressive eg Opus One ( California) or Barca Velha (Portugal).
Likewise a good bordeaux eg Pomerol

Happy to suggest something. I suspect you'd want the receiver to know/understand what he's getting i.e. a well known red Bordeaux or Burgundy?
Something mainstream I'd suggest.
