Over the last couple of months my chim has had a habbit of suddenly losing all electrical power. It happens very rarely and always when idling. Sometimes the car will restart immediately, sometimes I have to open the doorconfused before the ignition will come on. It has happened a couple of times when it is raining and once when someone opened the passenger door. Today however I parked up, turned the car off and returned a short while later and the there was no power to the door buttons. "Bugger" I thought and proceeded to "secret squirrel" my way into the car. The power then came back on with the ignition so all was well... but strange nevertheless.
At the moment it isn't much of a problem because it always restarts. However I am worried that one day it won't restart and no doubt I will be in a horrendously awkward/ embarrassing location when it does.
Any ideas peeps?

When I had similar, I had a loose connection on a big fuse thingy in the passenger footwell. (I had noticed a burning smell for a week or two, but had convinced myself I was imagining it. The loose connection had heated up the plastic cover & burned it!)

Check the connections on your 100amp fuse. Mine came loose a year or so ago and I got the same sort of symptoms as you're getting. Only take you 10 minutes. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I haven't had much chance to investigate properly yet. I shall have a look at the "big fusey thing"smile in the passenger footwell tommorrow if I get the chance. (Is that the 100amp fuse??)
THe problem hasn't occured for a while so if I can't find anything wrong, I might be inclined to put it down as a TVRism and get on with life.

Paulo,
You may have a large fuse by the battery in the main red lead.
However the normal place for the 100 amp fuse is on the chassis rail on the drivers side.
So you will need to get the car up in the air to see it. Disconnect the battery before doing any work on it as the 100 amp fuse is fitted between the alternator output and the battery positive so is always live.
The fuse is cheap and chearful and bolted to the inside of the main chassis rail near the clutch slave cylinder area and is known to give grief if not looked after. Some remove it all together which eliminates the problem.
Cheers.
Paul.
