Guys, this will be my 18th Le Mans and 17 of them have involved rushing up to somewhere on the French coast to be back in blighty ASAP.
This year is different as I'm not booked on the tunnel till Monday PM.
Can anyone recommend a middle of the range hotel at some point between LM and Calais, with nice food and secure parking?

i've done this a few times and without the need to book a hotel ahead. Have you tried the Formule 1 hotels, Campanile and the like.
I guess it depends if you are looking close to the port area? If this is the case maybe try a hotel further back along your route, Amiens is a good sized town with plenty of hotels or Le Touguet.
Most restaurants will be closed of course on sunday, so you'll need to have either troughing facilities at the hotel or nearby like a Buffalo Grill?

it does and 5 minutes down the road is a buffalo grill and it breaks up the journey.Yup.
I did this last year, what with the rain and everything else that happened I decided I'd had enough. So as soon as the race finished, I rang my dad and he managed to find a "Village Hotel" similar to a Fomule 1 etc. for about 50 euro's. Hot shower, bed and breakfast and it was only about 40 mines away from Le Mans. Nothing flash, but worth every penny, shall be doing it again this year. Leaves you nice and relaxed for the trip home with the exotica!

Hi Turbo - like F308MAN I too stay in Honfleur on the way back. Great ambience around the old port, lots of Brits stay there and on Sunday night there's a reasonable chance of getting a room. This year we're staying at L'Absinthe. Loads of places to eat - there are some great seafood reataurants.

No surprise that I know the back doubles out of Arnage, So I can get out pretty sharpish 
Hotel is especially challenging on account of partner being veggie (Buffalo Grill anyone?)

I have stayed at Alencon on many occasions before and after the race, and getting from the circuit is not a problem if you are prepared to wait and leave, say, 2 hours after the race has finished. With the 3 pm finish this year you should be able to get to Alencon, as per your plan, by 7 pm easily. Something to consider though: if you plan to go to Alencon via the A28 there is a toll at Le Mans, and the same toll area applies to the other A route to Paris, so it gets hugely busy by the French leaving in that direction. I'd opt to go back up the N138 to Alencon.
In fact, Alencon is my base of choice but I could not get booked in this year, so I'm staying at Falaise, some way north of Alencon, and once the race has finished I'll be doing the same as I've suggested to you: leave at 5pm and use the N138.

good ideas guys ill stay at track till around 6 to miss the worst of the traffic get the tent down and head to alencon , will check map for toll delay too, even if it takes a couple of hours in a queue its worth it for a good nights sleep, booked for e29 and extra for cornflakes! im a veggie too so see what the grill offers

If you leave the circuit at 6:00pm and use the N138 you should be in Alencon by 7:00pm in my view. I assume you know your way to the N138 via the commercial area of Le Mans, rather than through "centre ville".
For your Sunday night I can recommend L'Atelier Gourmand restaurant in Alencon, but you're a veggie and this is France.....

nightmare. I've seen people take 3 hours just getting off the campsites. I'd leave before the end of the race (a shame) if you want to avoid traffic or wait until well past 7.
agreed, it can take yonks to get off the circuit, depends where you are watching the end of the race, where your car is and how you intend to get away from the LM area.
if you are leaving early, you can keep up with the race by listening to Radio Le Mans, if you do leave early, might as well go at midday or thereabouts.
My choice of exit is to go out via the N226 to the A11 junction and then onto the A28, this way you'll not have so much traffic to contend with.

been going since 1996 (coach trip) but prefer driving, have always stayed sunday night, to save the Q to get out and remember driving the 'track' at 10 o'clock in 2001 with a few mates at silly speed but have never got a proper sleep after the race. saw this thread and thought it was worth the £30 for hotel, was going to spend that on car stickers!

now I find that odd, staying on HA and leaving early? Sunday night is the best night. Of course Wednesday is pretty good at the moose meet.
there is a large group of us on HA again this year, send me a pm and perhaps meet for a beer or three, we're on site from the Sunday.
