Go on, tell me that didn't get your attention!

I've tinkered with the heater on the Griff and had it all sorted and was getting a pretty decent blast of air into the car, but then I put the headlight pod back in and it all went pear shaped.
I found the motor was being strangled and couldn't get enough air in.

While the headlight pod was out I'd previously spotted a plate siliconed over a hole in front of the radiator right next to the motor, so I've pulled that plate off and now the motor can breath I'm getting a decent draught coming into the car again cloud9

My worry though - and this is where you come in - is that the motor will suck in all sorts of rubbish and water too. So i want to put some sort of gauze over the hole, held in place by a bit of metal mesh I can silicone in.
Can anyone suggest what the hell I can use as a gauze that will keep water out but let the air in?
I was thinking of something like a pan scourer?

Thanks for your help chaps.
Ian

Ian, if you are that worried, and I dont think you should be, instead of a mesh, why not fit some sort of scoop with an inlet at the top.
This would stop any splashes of water going straight in the hole, but also let the motor breath.
Maybe some sort of plasctic storage container with one side cut out, sprayed black and siliconed into place.

Any non-absorbant material with layers & very fine holes to break down water should work.
What about white cooker-hood filters or even a few layers of old Goretex from an old ski or golfing jacket.

hehe

Do you mean the ones in the nosecone Ian? I have just filled these in as I get water sitting in the bottom of the wing without when driving in heavy down pours and that means the carbon can will be sitting in water...

I made alloy plates for the wings, cut big holes in them and sandwiched cooker hood carbon filter material with mesh. Similar should work, B&Q etc sell the black oven hood stuff.

It really does cut down on the dust & crap thru the vents wink

Yes it is in the nosecone Simon. As you look into the mouth towards the rad I've now got a hole about as big as your fist on the right side and can see the heater motor fan through it.
Do they all have these holes then? It looks so Heath Robinson I thought it was a home made 'feature'
I don't have a carbon can so that's one thing less to worry about I suppose, and I do have a drain hole (either that or I've got Fibreglass worm)

I knew you'd know what I was talking about Antony. The reason for my concern is the hideous weather I've driven in just to Le Mans in the last 2 years.
The heater sucking up the spray, causing corrosion somewhere down the line - and possibly shoving moist air into the car, which it has been doing since I've had it actually, steaming up the clocks!

I'm going to try a couple of different things, as suggested here - see how I get on.

Oh, and after all this Antony, I've got a lovely breeze coming through. Its just a shame I can't get any heat into it banghead
