why is it reccomended to use mob1 in such an old engine that was originally designed to run on mineral oil? surely a slightly thicker viscosity mineral oil would be better for hydraulic lifters.? my tappets tend to clatter in the higher rev range,me thinks mob 1 is too thin.? what you think.?

I think you're absolutely right......so do all the V8 specialists I know.
I run mine on a mixture of Castrol 50W, Brownings gravy and lard.........now if only I could stop these damn dogs chasing me through the village

Use mineral oil if you want but be prepared to change it everytime the car runs because the heat will degrade it into sludge so quickly. Again this is another urban myth that because the engine is 50 years old it needs to run on a 50 year oil. Big discussion on this every other week so search the archives or read the section on oil type in the bible.

Twin-pipe - get some Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W-50. It's a full synthetic, but thicker. (is that synthickic? - sorry, it's still early for me).

And you can get it at Halfrauds, about £34 for 4L.

I bought some Mobil 1 from Halfords yesterday and they only stocked 0W-40, priced at £34.99 for 4L. I told them I'd seen elsewhere for £29.99 and they price matched it, I did'nt realise they did this. Just thought I'd mention it as there's nowt like saving a few bob.
I hope this oil is ok for my car?
Cheers

Most of the bigger Halfords sell the Mobil 1 15w/50 (full synthetic). Just need to phone around until you find that sells it, there is a store locator on the Halfords site that might help you.

This was recommended by my dealer and I reckon that they know more about these things than I do. Oil pressure always seems good and I barely ever have to top it up.

I use V.A.G. Synta fully synthetic in my Chim. Meets all the spec of Mobil 1, and it available at Skoda dealers at £15-18 quid for 5 litres. Excellent oil IMHO.

Of course if it makes you feel better, you can buy it at either VW or Audi dealerships and pay more for the same thing

I originally ran on Mobil 1 but was told not to by a couple of engineers 'in the know', cos it's too 'skinny'....I now run on M1 motorsport because I want to avoid engine damage.

The reason that TVR recommended Mobil 1 could be down to sponsorship, Rover Engine specialists / buiders will never recommend it ?

Changed to Castrol RS from Mobil one. Used to have low oil consumption before, now have even less, well happy, will not be going back.

Seconded/Thirded. Make sure you get the 15W60 rating though as the stuff they sell in Halfords is 0W40 and apparently just as thin as Mobil 1.

I was using Motul 300V Le Mans 15W60 as recommended by the engine builders but Castrol RS just comes in a better designed container!

Demon Tweeks sell it at a reasonable price but charge a fortune for delivery, something about oil and post not mixing well.

Don't like to mention Porsche on this site but the following must be a good endorsement! Also when I spoke to a chap in a local store he described Mobil 1 as over engineered
[(February 14, 2003) -- ExxonMobil today announced that Mobil 1 has been selected as original equipment (factory fill) for Porsche's new line of Cayenne sports-utility vehicles -- the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Each new vehicle will be filled with Mobil 1 viscosity grade 0W-40.
ExxonMobil has collaborated with Porsche on the lubricant requirements for the new Cayenne 4.5-liter, 32-valve V8 engine.
"Since the engine is key to achieving this goal, we again relied on Mobil 1 during the development and for the initial fill."
"We are extremely proud to have been involved in the development of the Cayenne engine from its initial stages and Porsche's selection of Mobil 1 as its oil of choice.
Mobil 1 provides a variety of performance benefits. These include fuel economy, excellent oil flow characteristics and outstanding protection from -50°C (-58°F) to +350°C (+662°F). Mobil 1 0W-40 is ideally suited for high-performance super-charged and turbo-charged engines.
Porsche uses Mobil 1 as factory-fill in all its current vehicle models and it is recommended for service fill as well.
Mobil 1 is also original equipment in a number of other high-performance vehicles.]

IIRC (thanks Big Al) I seem to remember a reasonably quick German engine that left the factory with only Castrol RS to keep it alive and well so it cannot be that bad. Having said that it may also have been because it was cheaper for them to buy in allowing them to fit a third seat without having to raise the selling price.
