after posting this morning saying how good my '98 400 has been so far, it decided to reassert its control in our relationship.
I got back from work this evening enjoying the chance to get the roof down and a nice little run out, it wasnt to be.
after pressing the button on the fob to unlock the doors I was welcomed with... nothing. after the lights didnt blink at me I knew something was up. Assuming I hads missed the point when the car had unlocked itself I tried to enter the car to be faced with a quiet(ish) screming noise coming from the vacinity of the alarm siren. after breaking into the car i tried all manners of things to get the bloody thing to stop screaming at me, but to no avail.
After chatting with both the guy who sold me the car (who was as helpful as he could be) and Leven technology who normally service the car the descision was made to attempt to disconnect the battery hope that the ECU resets the alarm and I could go on my way. This didn't happen.
The alarm stopped when the battery was disconnected but resumed the second the contacts were replaced. Both Leven and a passing RAC guy intimated that if disconnecting and recponnecting the battery didnt work then my next option would be a low loader and a holiday for my chim to go and see carl baker in Hampshire.
Basically I'm here to ask if this is the only option. My chim is still sat at the station with the battery disconnected, so; Is the lowloader the only way to get this sorted and if not, does anyone in the essex area know of someone a bit closer who may have the knowhow to get this sorted for me?
Sorry for rambling but I am quite uoset with my first non running issue and need help as I am pretty useles with these sort of things!
Many thanks in advance for your help

Dom, it's sounds like the car hadn't even been locked
. I suspect the battery in the key fob. Do you have a spare/how you getting on?3 things spring to mind
1. Is your battery charged ? Check by turning on headlights and such to see if it has much juice. if not, jump start then reset alarm as per step 2
2. Reset the alarm - you mentioned disconnecting the battery but what did you do on reconnect ? The procedure is disconnect battery for 5 seconds (by removing negative side) then reconnect and immediately press plipper. Car will lock/unlock and you are all sorted. Unless the battery is flat or low then it wont work
3. As previously stated the plipper battery may be low or not working at all. On my 97 model I have a widget I can stick into a slot by the ignition that turns off the immobiliser and doesnt need the plipper. This will work and the car can be driven even if the alarm is wailing. Have you tried starting it using this method..may point you back to step 1 above ...

Thanks to all for your help! It did end up to be a drained battery so jump started and reset the alarm and off we went.
Looking back it seems so simple now, in the heat of the moment i think einstein would have had trouble solving the conundrum that was my alarm!

Einstein pah........who needs him when bigdods got it in 1!Looking back it seems so simple now, in the heat of the moment i think einstein would have had trouble solving the conundrum that was my alarm!

I love this forum. I mean, words like conundrum - great. You just don't get that over the fence and even if you did, you can bet they wouldn't spell it correctly!!!
