Why can't we have BETTER forum software like say 6speedonlin
Discussion
Gents,
Why do we still have to put up with the outdated, slow, clunky, and primitive forum software utilised on Pistonheads??
There are much more advanced, easier to use, more intuitive systems out there which would massivley improve the user interface, the "friendliness" of the site to new users and gernerally improve the look and feel.
Try going over to 6Speedonline.com or Teamspeed.com as an example - it's much easier to make postings without needing to know all these "formatting rules" etc. - plus you get feedback when new posts are made on a topic you started, attatchemnts are easier etc. etc.
This site is archaic in comparison - sorry - much as I love it here - it does need an update.

Er...no thanks those other forums use phpBB or vBullitin, commercial forums that fall over if about 10% of the PH forum traffic were to run through them. PH has a lot of traffic sometimes there are problems yes but that's with the servers not the forum software. What's archaic? It's clean, does the job and isn't cluttered up with avatars and stupid signatures.

looks good to me, nice and clean without the clutter and wasted space so many other forums have. Very easy for mobile phone / PDA browsing aside of the menu's getting a bit screwy occasionally. Ad blocker is all you need I've found.
The search functions have always been dire and still are, worse infact. But the rest of it works for me

Agree with certain points - it's the posting area that needs work - too basic - some of the functionality of those other forums would be nice.
I think there are things in the works already, from what I know the traffic numbers have been higher than forecast and the main attention has been on server issues and making sure there are no more problems. If you have any ideas that could add to the PH experience then post them, the PH forum is a bespoke coded forum (TedSoft) and can be tweaked, prodded and cajoled into doing more than display "Ted" 100 times across the screen in different colours.

What functionality are we missing? A lot of the vB forums just bung in all the features (number of members online, who posted last in the forum, thread ratings, etc.) which mostly get completely ignored and don't add anything at all.An awful lot of PHers aren't too tech savvy and the fact that PH is nice and basic without flashy add-ons is a good thing in my opinion, and is one of the reasons I keep coming back.

The US sites are very content rich in terms of pictures etc. because it's so much easier to include them in your posts.

i like the simple PH interface, if you cant follow the ways of formatting/uploading pics etc after reading the stickies then you really arent intelligent enough to own a computer to start with.
yes it has it moments where it slows right down & falls over BUT its still a nicer interface compared to the commerical alternatives in my eyes.

Yes you are of course absolutley right - the Pistonheads software is clearly TOTALLY perfect and miles better than every other commercially sucessful system out there - clearly my opinion is totally wrong and worthless - I apologise for having the temerity to think otherwise. As you were.yes it has it moments where it slows right down & falls over BUT its still a nicer interface compared to the commerical alternatives in my eyes.
Of course it isn't perfect, what is?
But I've had a quick look at the forums you named, they aren't particularly pretty, and the topics are so cluttered with icons, superfluous info, and sigs that the content is almost lost in the noise. They seem to serve much bigger pages much faster, I'll grant you.
Care to be more specific (e.g. I listed my pet hates) ?

I think that 6speed one is horrible.
It's far too cluttered, looks messy, sigs and avatars have more of a presence than the content.
I think PH is fine as it is, it's clean and simple and the focus is on the contents of the posts. It just needs to be faster, it can be dreadfully slow some times.

Long may PH remain the same. Simple. Useable.
And the key thing with PH is that it's forum is integrated with the rest of PH. I remember when Ted introduced this, getting rid of a clunky add-on forum, and it's a killer feature.
I use no other forums. Largely because once you have used PH everything else is crap.
