BMW E28 5 Series 525e Auto - everyday proposition?

Why not Derin ? 16 miles each way ? Piece of cake......
We have a near mint E28 1987 525e that eats the miles without complaint. Remember these cars were designed for long distance Autobahn cruising, will return 40 MPG and are remarkably comfortable. Ours has a vast amount of factory fitted optional equipment, has been serviced meticulously by the main supplying dealer and has been enthusiast owned from day one.
We now need an estate for equestrian activities so shes due to be sold soon.

A mate had one of these on a D plate, really comfy and a great drive for its age. All was great with it until one day the engine packed up in spectacular fashion. Some sort of camshaft failure with no prior warning whatsoever!
However the bloke I'm refering to was less enthusiastic about looking after his car than he was about driving it so I suspect that a well looked after example as described by someone above would be fine.
No, its the switch for sports/economy for the gearbox....

I say this (i.e "...that IMHO an E28 no longer makes a sensible proposition as a daily driver... etc etc) for the following reason:We have a near mint E28 1987 525e that eats the miles without complaint. It's not because I don't believe a decently sorted E28 could cope with the demands of daily driving of 16 miles each way...it should be able to...easily!
However, really genuinely good E28's are now rare cars. If used as daily drivers (and what worried me most in the OP was: "...in all weathers..." ) wear and tear type deterioration is inevitable...and that would be a shame and a pity. Just as you've alluded to in your advert? That is, "Out of respect to the car and to preserve it's value...".
Conversely, a 'dog' of an E28 isn't worth having at all! (Again IMHO) They're all at least 20 years old now. It will look horrible, drive horribly, lots will go wrong and it probably won't pass its next MOT. So, I wouldn't recommend one like that as a sensible daily driver, in all weathers, either.
Thus, as a current owner of three generations of 5-Series, for the sums of money that might be involved (i.e look at how cheaply you can buy a decent E39 now?) I find it difficult to recommend an E28 as a sensible proposition as a daily driver for all seasons anymore.

I have one of these not usd for about 4 years on my drive. If anyone needs one for spares or repair let me know. Was a great cruiser when it was going, crank sensor wire failed and i took me ages to track it down and i'd bought another car in the meantime. Very relaxing to drive, you just tend to drift along slowly, and economically, as it doesn't really encourage flinging about. Good car for the new tax regimes that are upon us, classic insurance etc
