Any one on here got a ducati Monster
Discussion
As it says on the tin really.
I've always fancied one, and if I can sort the licence out I quite fancy the new 696. so does anyone have experience with running one of the 600 ish monster. I understand the 695 was a big change, Iorning out many of the "features" of the earlier bikes...
DO you thing a 696 would be a good first bike ?
all ducati experience would be good to hear
Cheers

A 696 would be a good first bike, try http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/ for a range of opinions. Most hardened Monster enthusiasts will take a while to get used to the change in style, I thought it looked too much like a Fazer when I first saw the pics but it looks great "in the flesh"!
Hi, I had an 96 monster 600 as my first bike and really enjoyed it. Had it for a about a year and a half. But had to let it go because lack of use after i got the honda sp1. The plan was to use it around town and for commuting but did'nt happen. The monster wasn't all that fast and the wind blast above 70 was quite bad (mine didn't have a screen). Mine was an older bike and as long as it was used often had no problems but when it was left to sit it could be a pig to start. Have not had experience of the newer models, but if i was to start again i would go for a bigger engine, to me it felt quite slow quite quickly but this could just be me. It would depend on wha you use the bike for also as to wich engine size would suit you.
Im looking at either a new 696 or possibly a year old 695, so the bigger engine than the earlier 600/620.
Im looking for something to use on the round town stuff. I dont have a regular commute but i probably go out 2-3 times a week during the day, and the disco can be a pita if i've got to get across town.
Then probably a little bit of playing at the weekend.
Im more interested in something jump on and chuckable than outright performance and speed. thats part of the reason for going for a naked bike... The faired bikes get more stable at speed, where as the monster is probably going to be more of a pita at high speeds, and i think they vmax at about 115-120 anyway..
Its also a noise thing... and the duke motor is the bike equivalent of a v8

Hi Graham,
I have been running around London a Monster 695 for the past year now on a daily commute across town - 8 miles each way.
Would highly recommend the 695 as a first bike. Easy to ride, low seat height and easy controls. Have just had some high-level termis fitted and it now sounds even better!
Only thing I would say is that the turning circle them is pants - very small range lock-to-lock which sometimes makes doing the really tight filtering a bit tricky. However, the noise and the looks of the thing more than make up for it.
Also, recommend changing to a 14T front sprocket as the standard 15T is a bit too much if you are doing mostly town-riding. As said before ukmonster is a good site but feel free to PM me if you want more info.
Go for it!
cheers,
John

I've got a, '02 600, my first bike.
I love it and so far it's turning out to be a great first bike. It's quick enough to make me know that I'm on a bike and to have put driving cars for fun out of my mind for the time being, but I've never felt nervous or intimidated by it or had any scary moments.
Mine is without a screen and I seem to hit a wall as far as the wind goes. I can sit at 90, but any more than that and I would very quickly run into problems, but I can happily sit at 80-85 all day long without a problem (and I really am not a very areodynamic rider!).
I find the bike very easy to ride, particularly at slow speeds. Way easier than the CB500 I did my DAS on. I keep surprising myself when I come up behind traffic at how long I find myself balancing the bike and at what slow speeds before putting my foot down.
Mine came with some carbon cans and a K&N filter and it does sound awesome. It has an induction roar like a McLaren F1.
If I'm honest though, I'm starting to wonder whether I'd have been better off going for a 750 or maybe even a 900. I wanted to err on the side of caution when starting out, but now I've been riding for a few months, I've realised I'm not really interested in riding particularly fast and I don't seem to be as irresponsible with the throttle as I may have been. I think I'd have prefered the extra capacity just to make cruising a little easier and to add a bit more poke for when the opportunity presents itself.

Hi - I have a monster 750 which I bought after passing my DAS last year. It has been great for doing the sort of stuff you describe. Currently I work abroad and therefore do not get enough use out of it. I am going to put it into storage with a bike company because I am not around enough to sell it myself. Has been maintained by top people all its life - Not sure on rules of advertising on here, but PM me and if you are interested maybe it wont have to go into storage after all...

I bought a M750 new back in 2001. All opinion at the time said you'd get bored with the then 600's.
They were right, and I was glad I went with the 750.....until some thieving scum knicked it 3 years later......
Although the 695/696 is a world away from the older 600's, I'd still say go for a nearly new S2R 800 instead.
Have to say I hate the look of the new 696......yuk, how to ruin an iconic design IMHO.
