Hi, I'm just about to turn 17, could get a white 1995 Volvo 940 Estate 2.3i (naturally aspirated) for a couple of hundred £££ from a friends parents.
I personally love Volvo Estates and I would preferably like a bigger car to get my puppy and mountain bike in the rear, I wouldn't mind driving a tank, but I can't seem to find ANY info on fuel economy etc. Also, I hate to think what insurance would cost, even though I'm not the one paying for it, lol.
Thanks in advance guys!

White tends to look like an ambulance
2.3 nat asp is reasonably poky
2.3LPT much better
2.0 nat asp ok but lacks the power to get up hills although it will tow a mini on a trailer happily (except on hills)
Body usually in decent nick, think they are all galvanised, mechanics reasonably bomb proof and 200k+ miles not unusual
Has the car got 4speed and overdrive or 5 speed box, which is one less thing to go wrong.
as a new driver, they are a bit big to get into parking spaces but you can just about see all the corners. Park one of these and you can park anything.
They can carry more than a Landy or Disco.
Have very little street cred

Over 5 cars and 40k miles problems:
Handbrake shoes are a pain,
Pipe to power steering pump corrodes & leaks at banjo connection. Easy fix.
Bottom ball joints wear - about £42 from Volvo main dealer
Exhausts rot, generally around the rear.
The rear wiper doesn't work, if it does theres something wrong!!
Remember it's rear wheel drive, a proper car!!
If you post questions on here about 940's you dont get responses (or at least I don't)

Pretty much spot on.

Ive had my 740 for just over 3 years now. Its towed my caravan, pulled cars out of ditches, been abused down the motorway at 1.1 leptons, been thrown around the B roads at fair speeds, and it still keeps going.

It cost me £100, and has flown through its MOTs so far. Its 3rd MOT is in a few weeks, then its pretty much off to le mans when thats done - caravan in tow!

Apart from normal maintenance, dodgy fuel gauge occasionally and a few tyres, its never needed anything!

I've just bought my parents white 940 too! It's a 2.4 Diesel so a bit more economical (hopefully over 40mpg on a decent run). I think insurance will be the biggest issue for you though, Mine is expensive and I'm 22, at 17 it's going to be horrific unless you put yourself on your parents policy and run the risk that you'll get claims turned down (not really worth it IMO).

Although it's a big car I don't find parking any more difficult that my previous cars (peugeot 205/106s) and the turning circle is incredible, especially given the size of the thing.

Not much street cred but my friends all love it. I like the classlessness of it- people really don't know what to make of you when they see you in it which is a refreshing contrast to my other car (106 Rallye).
