Is this correct because I can't believe it.

Property empty and unfurnished = after initial 6 month exemption full council tax payable.

Same property but with a single person living there = 25% discount

I know the single discount is right, what my question is (not very clear granted) if the property is empty, ie no burden on local council resources you still pay full whack.

If 1 person lives there, ie burden on local resources (rubbish collection, etc etc) you get a 25% discount.

Yep. Even worse for commercial property.

The idea behind the change was to encourage people to let out empty properties.

Yes, that sounds correct, unless things have changed VERY recently

It always tickles me that one person can use 75% of the services used by a family of 26.

I let it tickle me because if I considered it for any length of time, I might do a Guy Fawkes on whomever is responsible for such a moronic decision.

It is correct but IIRC you pay 50% every month and not 6 months nil and 6 months full quota. smile

That's because the goverment think, (if think is the right word!) that if you can afford to have a property standing empty, then you can afford to pay full whack.

I find the whole council tax extremely laughable.

Single guy, in a nice 2 bed apprtment pays more than someone in a council estate that has 4/5 kids!

I also find it extremely funny that you can get a house with 8 people living there but when you have a family of 4 (2 adults 2 kids) your contribution to the local area is the same as where 8 aldults live in the same house!

In addition to this the council owned houses that are rented out in my area all proceeds from the rent are then taken away from the local authority to be given to a authority in the north of england to build affordable housing. Which is why my council propose to raise the c/tax by 1-% every year since the thieving labour scum have been nicking the money from my convservative council to give it to a labour council up north.
