W124 Head Units
Discussion
Hello all
The Becker Mexico 2000 head unit in my W124 is losing the lighting in the background.
I want a plug and play CD player from another Mercedes to pop in its place. I have the earlier 1991 500E which has the amp etc in the boot and I wont be changing this at all.
So, any CD players in W124 cars?
Dave!

If you have Becker CD changer, and want to continue using it, I think you'll be limited to that era of Becker head unit for a replacement
I have a Becker head unit from a 1993 W124 with Premium Sound System that had a changer & amp in the rear footwell. That might do the trick

I put a Blaupunkt unit in my E500 to replace the original Becker. Didn't cost much, looks nice, front folds down to admit a CD, and it has an auxilliary jack for connecting an iPod.
There are quite a few nice standard looking ones for the E500 but sadly the 500E has different wiring, most head units need rewiring to fit.How are you getting on with the car anyway?
Dave!
Blimey, has the car got a full history?
I had my gearbox oil changed at about 190,000km and when the pan was off it all looked perfect. Apparently it's not uncommon for these to give some troubles though.
What were the symptoms?
When my little jobs are done i'll have to find an excuse to come and look at your E500, just to be nosey and for the gratuitous photo oppertunity.

Yes full history but mine has done 302,000kms now, which isn't bad going for an autobox on a powerful car. I managed to get the supplying dealer to go halves on the cost though.
Symptoms:
1) 5-10 sec delay in engaging when reverse selected, then engaging with a jolt;
2) very clunky gearchanges; and
3) Not kicking down from 4th to 3rd at motorway speeds (would hunt horribly).
It's still not really apparent what was amiss, but the gearbox was removed from the car, stripped down and rebuilt. Apparently all the gearing is fine, but some of the ancilliary bits were naffed. Anyway, at least it now drives beautifully!
You're more than welcome to come and take a look.

Mine came back from the dealer with an appalling loud zizzing coming from the driver's doorcard. Turned out to be the wood veneer capping being slightly loose and resonating. I cured it with a very high-tech solution - judicious application of blu-tac between the capping and the actual doorcard.
