Anyone out there swapped a rack on a S3 Esprit?

I've just passed the MOT, but was advised that there was excessive play in the rack. Hadn't really noticed myself...

I believe that these cars are hard on steering racks, but I'm disappointed that mine seems to be shot after only 23,000 miles.

As I will doubtless have to do the job myself, can anyone tell me if it a straightforward procedure, or a bitch?

Cheers,

Pat.

Di you try and remove some shim plates to tighten up the rack or is it beyond adjustment?

The service notes tell me not to remove shims as it might tighten the unworn ends of the rack....

Is this a little over cautious of Lotus, or are they just trying to sell steering racks?

Try using a shim, you have nothing to lose if you are intending to get a new rack anyway.
I have removed a shim with other cars I have owned, only once did I not get more life out of it. After removing a shim make sure the action is still smooth from lock to lock (with the front wheels off the ground)
