Clutch went this morning. Changed down to turn into a side road and there was a step change in pedal feel, managed to wrestle it into 2nd gear and drove 3 miles home, negotiating roundabouts and T-junctions(!) without stopping yikes. At least I got it back into the garage. I'd left my mobile at home too, to make it all the more stressful.

I think it's the dreaded fingers this time, pedal feel is still quite firm but feels distinctly odd.

Car's done 36k on the original clutch so looks like it's gone bang on cue rolleyes

I'm off on me hols for a while now but will get the AA out when I get back, maybe they'll pay for it, or some of it. Do broken fingers classify as wear and tear? I got the slave done on warranty..

Sorry to hear your bad news.

The fingers are covered. Mine have gone twice and both times they have paid out. However, they like the servicing to be up to scratch etc.

Dont forget though. You'll have to ring them up and say you cant get it in gear. Dont say your clutch has gone and you managed to get it home. They only pay out if they come to assist you and they cant repair it.

Understood, thanks for the tip. It's been due a service for a couple of months but I've only not had it done because the insurance company have had the service book. Hopefully it'll pan out and they'll pay out.

I know there have been loads of threads on this but being a lazy git...what's be best clutch, clever trevor? Don't think I need a race spec multi plate job, just something that won't slip, break or wear out too quickly smile

I was going to put a clever trevor in, but there was a shortage of them at the time, so obviously couldn't. After 6 weeks or so and not knowing how long the wait would have been, I decided to put another AP one in. If you want a CT one....ring Jools up at Trackcar.

They can be quite firm and I dont think that your excuse will wash but I am not sure where they draw the line re overdue services.

Mine was overdue by a couple of months, but the mileage was only 4000 miles since the previous one. It was getting serviced at the same time as the clutch repair which helped. Only thing I had to do was to send them a copy of the previous service to prove that there was no mention of any clutch probs at that time.

Sounds promising, similar story here (will be serviced at the same time). Mileage since previous service will be about 3k (one trip to south of France and off the road for most of the rest of the time). Touch wood. Thanks for the advice folks.

What a bugger Rog, probably all the traffic getting home on Sunday that finished the blighter off. I had a new one just before the Ring last year and after much cojotating, I stuck with the AP kit. Basically cos APM were fitting it and (having not yet fitted or had experience of the CT stuff) Andy was not able to vouch for the CT like he was prepared to do with the AP, which he reckons are pretty decent now and should do 40k without probs (pretty much what yours has done) - which ever way you go I think you shouldn't have any real probs however.

As it is 'breakdown repair' I was told you have to 'breakdown' needing AA recovery ie not 'homestart' - cost me a claim last month 'cos I got the car home when the lambdas and cats went ....

I claimed when the car didnt start from home - I think it is ok so long as you can prove the problem occurred at home and you didnt drive the car home with the problem.

Just to update this thread:

It was the fingers. Andy's put an OEM AP plate in and new thrust bearing and slave seals. It was good timing really, I'm taking it to the south of France in a few weeks. And the week before I was stuck in the single lane A3 contraflow, in the snow biggrin

I've got the full monty AA cover so the AA guy came over and made a determined effort to fix it. We spent a while bleeding it (fluid looked v cloudy, not bits of rubber but more like soot confused ). Needless to say this was futile so a flatbed came and took it away.

The warranty paid up no problem (again) thumbup. The big service is also done and will hopefully pick it up tonight. Can't wait bouncedriving

(Big thanks to Andy smile )

This is the breakdown repair cover which the AA offer as an option on their regular recovery service. Click http://www.theaa.com/services/breakdowncover/option_table.jsp  and scroll down a bit for info. You only need one successful claim of £475 every 7 years for it to pay for itself @£67pa smile

My 97 Cerbera is the oldest car I've had for a while and I was unaware this sort of cover existed. We have family breakdown cover with the RAC mainly for my wife's peace of mind but for Cerb ownership this looks very worthwhile.

Can you add breakdown repair cover to just the basic cover or do you need to have a higher level of cover?

What repairs are able to be done for the £500 (inc VAT) figure? Alternator? Starter motor? Radiator? What else? I am surprised a clutch is less than £500 fitted.

RAC don't seem to have a similar product.

when my rac policy runs out i'm gong elsewhere, for me personally their service has been very poor at best.

i will probably ring the AA and get their best quote for family cover and the repairs cover.

Have been advised by a Tuscan owning friend that AA refused him repair cover as they no longer take on TVR's!! They certainly renewed me ok around Christmas so maybe it's new business only or maybe he just got a jobsworth if he was doing it by phone (I did mine online when first set up). Also interesting to see they now have a 10 years or older option for a bit more dosh, previously it was 10 years max I thought.
