In all the miles in my s2, never was I left wanting more powerfull stoppers for the road?!
My biggest complaint about the braking performance was the low front end grip at slow speed or in wet conditions. An easy way to combat this (but not cheap) is to stick on some sticky tyres, however this means the probable purchase of news rims and suspension comps.

sorry if i'm not much help

I'd have to say that driver training is probably the answer - it certainly is for me as I know that I'm not fully utilising the (braking) power of my S2 - Andy Walsh can stop a lot harder than I can so it's down to me I guess. However this is not stopping my next upgrade being to the brakes! smile

yes ive done a Walshy day but in a hire car (orange 111R - lovely)

i know you have to stamp the brakes in a K-series and it stops well

but wanted something easier as my right foot is lazy!!

Actually someone has brought up a very serious point. Your Tyres. Remember braking is not all "mechanical". The amount and type of rubber on your tyres (and it's conditioning) has a significant effect on braking distances. teacher

sorry forgot to say have A048s so tip top there as well.........

realise im never going to replicate servo assisted stopping power of a 111R

but there must be something else...anyone fitted better disks?

pros? cons? cost?

Sure you are. Same calipers I believe so just push harder.

I hate servo assistance.

Pair of 295mm or 304mm disks should sort it out for you, total overkill for the road IMHO but does the job or even Elise Parts Ally Belled Disks.

I think you'll find most of the Elise race cars use slightly larger discs but standard calipers. Chris Randall (Randy on Seloc) reckons the standard calipers are more than up to the job unless endurance racing when you might want bigger calipers and pad therefore pads to better dissipate heat. Chris races a 300+bhp supercharged Honda Elise in the Elise trophy (and won more races than anyone else last year).
The standard size brakes on the Elise are more than up to road and track day work. Just push the things harder and learn to threshhold brake (wish I could!).

correct...

at the end of the day, the disks is where you should spend the cash, the calipers are fine.

Get someone to time your car stopping from 60mph and compare with the times in Autocar for other cars. You might be surprised how quickly it stops already! Even as standard an Elise is one of the fastest deceleration cars on the market. With your upgrades it should be sensational.

Sports cars can often appear to not be stopping as fast because of the lack of the front end diving under braking. That might be making you think the car's not stopping very well? Nigel Mansell famously did one lap in a Williams F1 car with active suspension before coming in to complain the brakes weren't working; he'd been used to the car diving forwards under braking, and all of a sudden it wasn't.

If you just want to have to put less effort into braking, and don't care about the subsequent loss of brake feel, why not just fit a servo?

Press harder? im a lazy bd!

adding a servo would be very expensive i presume and add weight

and wasnt aware it could be done............

I just posted this on the exige s tuning thread

On Brakes - I have a 240R and these were the 3 options presented to me by Plans when the OEM needed replacing at the front. Prices were current in January.

Plans told me "As rough guide, the 295 kit gives approx 2/3 rds of the improvement of the 4 pot kit, for roughly a third of the price. Ultimatley, the 4 pot kit is the best available road/track solution, it depends upon your usage - I would go for the best possible kit and do the work only once, rather than find when you go quicker, do more track days, you need to upgrade again. Unfortunaley the 295 kit is not the same as the Lotus kit, due to larger discs and different offsets."

Replace front pads and discs with OE as you currently have, this is £99.50 for the pads and £110 per disc, fitting is 1 hour at £49.50 per hour.

Replace front pads with OE and fit our 295 mm AP discs, this is the same price for pads and £455 for the discs, fitting is 1.5 hours at £49.50 per hour.

Replace front discs and pads with Lotus Motorsport AP 4 pot kit, this is £1575 for the parts and fitting is 2.5 hours at £49.50 per hour.

Keep in mind the 240r has braided brake hoses too which make a big difference. not sure if the S has that.

As mentioned several times... the calipers are plenty good enough to win pretty much every elise trophy race, there really is no need to replace them, the money would be much better invested in training to ensure you get the most out of what you have. But if you want the extra confidence of the 4pot big brake upgrade, there are plenty of people that'll sell you them.

For track work, before going the whole hog and spending nearly 2 grand on the upgrade, next time I was on a trackday, I'd ask an instructor to give me their view on how hard I was working the brakes. If you are only using 50% of their potential, there plenty other places to spend money before you upgrade the calipers.

I'm still struggling to see how one would want more braking out of an Elise. A partridge ran out in front of my S2 111S the other day. I'm running standard discs with a slight upgrade in pads (for less pedal travel). I stopped using threshold braking from about 45mph and my girlfriend said she was nearly sick with the force of it!! I found it pretty uncomfortable with a three point belt to be quite honest.
