It's such a shame.
Discussion
I first joined Pistonheads because I am interested in cars and was buying a couple which would require the benefit of feedback form other owners.
I found the support and information with respect to these cars extremely good and the other posters really friendly, what more could I ask from a forum?
Since then I have strayed into the darker areas, and what a letdown!
Yes it is a good idea that there are areas where people, who are theoretiaclly of a like mind, can discuss topics other than cars occasionaly. Unfortunately many of these interesting threads are rapidly taken over by the same small groups of people who appear to be conducting their personal vendettas in public!
I am well aware of the "TROLLS" on here, and can normaly spot their posts easily. The people I am referring to do not appear to be posting their comments as a wind-up, there is far too much Venom for that.
It's a shame that these people cannot either get a life or start up their own Grumpy old Gits Forum which we could then hijack and start talking about cars.
I apologise if you think that this is in the wrong forum!

Well f
k off then!
Seriously, you've only been here 2 months!!
What a horrid response. I'm genuinely embarrased that someone who normally resides in the car based forums wanders over to a new forum and let's their comments be known and that is the first response they get.

How utterly rude of you.
One of the benefits of PH compared to other forums is that the different areas are quite distinct. Yes, PH is first and foremost a car forum but there are areas for discussing most things, and a general chat (Pie & Piston) forum. I assume it's the P&P you are referring to.
I don't think the mods can win on this - if they let threads run their natural course then people complain that trolls, etc. are ruining the forum, but if they rule with a heavy hand people complain that PH has lost the spirit that makes it what it is!
I'm in the middle on this, there are some cretins who jump in and ruin threads, but equally there are some very funny threads that sail pretty close to the wind that I like to read and don't want to get binned.
As the saying goes, you can't please all of the people all of the time. I agree that it's annoying when a serious thread goes downhill, but there's nothing to stop you starting your own inviting serious responses, or if it's getting out of control clicking the "report post" button.
Ultimately you can stay out of the P&P if it's not your bag, but it's a shame as there is some good useful info in there.
Don't write it off because of the odd idiot, just learn to "filter"
