(When I was a kid I saw a Space Shuttle fly over Cirencester, piggybacking on a 747. Not necessarily what you expect to see on a day trip to see the remains of a Roman settlement.)

Yes it worked - It made one successful automated flight with no people aboard. It took off, completed a few orbits and landed again.

Blimey! looks like a better effort than you might have imagined.

Not so sure I believe it was 'un-manned' thought, despite what they claimed, looks like a regular anonymous hero of the USSR landing that thing, or was their automated technology really that good?

Russian automated systems have always been more advanced than Western systems - they didn't trust the crew. They also extended this to their military aircraft, turning the pilots into little more than radio recievers, with all commands being sent from the ground.

One of the reasons for the unmanned flight was that the life support system was not functional and it had to fly before a Communist party congress IIRC.

The Shuttle could have been fully automatic - and these days it almost is.

In fact, the final Apollo missions were landing within 1/2 mile of the aircraft carriers - and that was in a vehicle with the aerodynamic properties of a fruit gum.

Amazingly, the shuttle can land automatically, providing one cable is installed!
