Marketing Guru's - Creating high quality opt-in campaigns

Ok, so been reading Geurilla Marketing. I now consider myself a Geurilla, but I need a common sense way to build a database and I've never done it before.
Firstly... what would be a good way to get opt-in and create the first mailing list? I was thinking of banner ads running promotions on sites like facebook, bebo and myspace (for my student market) and a newspaper campaign for older customers to cut out and send in.
I'd want to send both email and snail mail marketing material, as well as SMS and MMS... but I really want that opt-in rather than buying a generic database of 30,000 people that were interested in a toothpaste giveaway 7 years ago
Is there a really good, adaptable contacts database available for this sort of thing that can export phone numbers, addresses and emails at the click of a mouse using different filters? I'd like to keep my commercial prospects on there too
