Hi all,

Recently bought a volvo s40 2.0 Diesel, do alot of miles so after a couple of months went to volvo for its 60,000 service, £350ish from main dealer, all good, asked about the next service (72,000) they said something about £1000+ and I asked WTF? they started blabbing about a diesel particulate filter and it needed changing and costs £400 or something??

dont have £1000 spare so took it to local Bosch garage who said its basicly a catalytic converter and just needs cleaning and quoted me approx £600 for the whole service

eventually got it all serviced and it cost me about £550, new cam belt etc.

Im happy, but theres still a niggle about the diesel particulate filter, I dont do diesels as a general rule, but can re-build a petrol blind folded, so can someone explain to me what this filter is, if its a optional extra and what i need to do with it every 72,000 miles??

I use the car daily for work and average 1000-2000 miles a week so really need it to be reliable!!

Thanks in advance....

from my citroen days when they started using them i remember that they are there to help the environment and for eu emission standards, on citroen they had a little tank of oil for them too which injected into the exhaust system every so often to make it run at a higher temperature to breakdown the exhaust gases, i think its just an excuse to get more money out of you, and think its just an extra cat

hi,yes the particulate filter does need changing every 72k,also the additive should also be topped up and both filter and additive will need the timers resetting in the computer other wise warning lights will soon becoming on for emmisions, why was the cambelt changed ? im sure its over 100k before needs changing.

hmmm, hanks for the quick replys, Aparantly the cam belt is due at 72,000 and with the way i drive, its not a bad thing to have it changed more frequently anyway so im not too bothered about that!

as for the filter and various fluids, is it going to break things if i leave it for the warning lights to come on before getting it fixed, or is it advisable to get it changed pretty damn sharpish??

Ive been told its an optional extra too - is that true??

Might have to get my hands dirty and actually crawl underneath her soon....

the particle filter is part of the exhaust system and where i worked before we just ended up retopping the special fluid and resetting the warning.. the particle filter is as i would say just an extra catalyst that has the special fluid pumped into it every so often to burn the particles left in the exhaust system... from what i remeber at citroen the go through a clearance stage on their tester to clear it through and runs at around 500 degrees

You dont need to replace the filter unless its blocked - it was part of the service at 72k
Ive seen cars with 150k and never had a particulate filter, the more miles you do the better as they are self cleaning.

The fluid should be replaced every 36k or you get a message on the dash, this is added to the tank every time you fill up.
