PS3 & Films

I down load films (avi format) from the web and transfer to the PS3, some films are shown on the list and work, other films with the same file format returns "unsupported format", when selected I can read all the information on the file, including the film name, but it wont play ....Any ideas for a fix..

I suffer from the same problem, some films just come up with unsupported file format and won't play. So I'd be interested why, my fix for now is just to pop them into the 360 and play them there.

One of the problems with video formats is they are sadly not straightforward, for most of us it would be great if a filename extension (e.g. .avi) was consistent.

As it happens AVI@s are just the form of 'container' (don't ask me any more than this, I'm past my limit of knowledge already!) - and can have differently encoded video types (e.g. Divx codec or Xvid etc...) and different audio types. Throw in different sampling/frame rates and the possible permutations are almost limitless, so sadly what this means is not every (or even any?) device will play all .avis. Normally you can look for the right playback codec (e.g. downloading DivX and installing the Codec pack) but it assumes your device can do that and that you find the right one.

In short - nothing wrong with your device, just found some incompatible file types.

I have a friend who uses a program called
"Red Kawa PS3 Video 9" or something like that, which I believe is free to download or free trial from the likes of download.com
It basically takes the file and converts it into a format that the PS3 recognises and then can be magicked to your PS using TVersity.
