To cowl or not to cowl

Fan died on the way to Mania and seems to be the bearings somewhere in the motor turned to sand, still trying to split the top cover orfski to have a proper look. So in the event I can't replace the bearing or source a replacement one to fit to existing cowl, does it make a difference if fitted directly against the rad? Taking into account that the cowl covers the whole of the rear of the rad etc at the moment?

Nice car. I see that you've even got the bib spoiler. The cowl is a luxury fitted to later cars and probably quite effective. I would try very hard to renew the bearing. What do you need?

For info, the scribbling on the rear says "David Craig PTY LTD Melbourne Australia. SSW-1158 (R) and 399600" Found one reference on PH for the same but no solution

Still trying to split the lid off to see whats no longer a bearing but back at work now so as and when I can. Let you know if I manage it, thanks. Interesting comment on the cowl.
So its better to keep the cowl if poss rather than bolt 2 fans to the rad?
Bite the bullet and go the twin Kenloe route.
they come with adjustable cowls/shrouds that butt up against rad effectively drawing air through rad and not from the engine bay.
Your set up may well be as/more efficient if it means rad is totally enclosed.
Obviouse bonus with 2 fans - youve always got one if one fails!

Yeah, thinking that Saturday. Just the usual misplaced belief that there is some good in the existing system, that and a bearing is cheaper than 2 new fans but then 2 heads needing work are a lot more expensive and hassle. And my weekend was totally shot knowing I had to nurse the car everywhere and not blat past the slow cars.
Spoke to RT today and a few insights gained so 2 it is. Will still try to see if the old one is repairable, might come in handy for someone.

Cheers, but went down the route of 2 new ones from RT earlier.
Jonathan, can't get the lid off anyway. The 4 screws holding it inplace are a trick. Suspect it has been pressed into place with a hefty force. Thanks all.
Now all I have to do is remove the cowl, looks easy enough so getting first aid box, ambulance, fire brigagde and the SAS ready. That should do it
