Minding my own business, then, BANG!
Discussion
Just changed all my water pipes to decent silicon ones, refilled and went out for a drive to makes sure no air trapped.
1st geared and pull away vigorously at a set of lights and BANG. Diff stripped!
No drive in any gear, but you can hear what used to be teeth scrabbling for a bite.
The car is now on top of a flat bed making it's way to plans for I suspect a LSD,Clutch and maybe 6 speed + new crank seal and a big bill.
Lets hope the guys at Plans are not too smashed out and get it all done by LeMans.

If for any reason you don't go for the 6spd (and M400 Linkage) then make sure you get the 5spd shot peened (I think). I wish Plans had told me to do this while I had the chance.
Also worth thinking about cutting the bar and re-fixing it like in the USA as this means the engine won't have to come out (saving ££££

I was under the impression that for a new Diff the engine had to come out. If not then the removable section is a must do. I will quiz Plans on this tomorrow.
The diff is installed in the transaxle (transmission). No need to remove the engine to replace the diff, if you remove the transaxle by removing the side bar.I was under the impression that for a new Diff the engine had to come out. Yep. That's how they did mine in January.
I found that it saved me about £600-700 (lost a little due to the extra labour to remove and replace the side bar and fashion a fixing point). However, next time round it should save even more as the bar won't need to be worked on - it's now bolt-on.

So, If it is the diff and I don't need to remove the engine, what are the essential mods.
Obviously the LSD upgrade, but which one/who's? As the car will be in bits, should I have the clutch done and gearbox uprated(standard 5 speed)Or is this unnecessary at the moment as the engine will not have to come out to have this done when it is needed.

When I had mine done the garage inspected the gearbox and clutch. They mentioned each were both still in good nick and estimated they had a good 25K+ miles in them still. Mine's done 27K miles.
I went for the Quaife ATB LSD - around £600 with (within reason) a lifetime guarantee. Part number is on the Wiki.

Just waiting for John at Plans to let me know the damage to my mortgage fund.
I will follow his advise, but the thinking is new 5 speed G/Box, Clutch, LSD. Also might shot peen the box internals incase I want more power as I am at the limit of the standard 5 speed box now.
You might not need a full gearbox and clutch replacement. I managed to skulk home slowly (wasn't too far away luckily) when I did the diff and managed to save the gearbox/clutch.Just waiting for John at Plans to let me know the damage to my mortgage fund.

You must go 6 speed and have it shot peened. Not only will the shot peening make it stronger, it has much less drag, more HP to the wheels Just waiting for John at Plans to let me know the damage to my mortgage fund.

Trust me, I had it done and it showed on the rolling road.
Can not see the pont of having LSD and 5 speed. Also, get the M400 linkage, transforms the car like you will not beleive.
Smooth changes, no more "calling all gears".
Call me if you want to chat about it, you should still have my number, if not, mail me via my profile I will send you my mobile.
Kind regards
Ash.
Ash, why can you not see the point in having the 5 speed and LSD??
The only weak point in the 5 speed is the open diff, I have never heard of an lsd equipped 5 speed failing, where as the 6 speed has been known to let go in 5th!!
Also back to the real world here, the cost differance between just installing a lsd in his current 5 speed and upgrading to a 6 speed is massive, for the 6 speed from plans with the mods you suggest is going to be well over 6K, as it requires various other bits changed (wishbones, new speedo senders and fitting, fuel tank etc.)
If he is not going for big power, then a good condition 5 speed with LSD will be more than up to the job. and save him a LOT of money.

I thought the gearbox had gone as well, which is why I did not see the point.
I would still do the shot peen, it will have a lot less drag and changing will be quicker and slicker. Also, less drag more BHP to the wheels.
If its out, do it.
I had mine done at the Gearboxman and they did a great job.
OK, Next post please for me to miss read!
Keep em coming

This is getting scarily expensive.
New 5 speed, Clutch, LSD, crank seal cause it's seeping and I'm already into £4.6K.
With shot peening I am looking at another £700+
Realistically I'll have no change from 6K.
Does it really need the shot peening?
Where did you get the quote for that?New 5 speed, Clutch, LSD, crank seal cause it's seeping and I'm already into £4.6K.

Did you try Gearboxman?
No, you don't need it, it is a "like to have".
