To be honest mate - your not going to find any S2 Elise's (sort of v high mile early ones or Cat C/D accident damanged) at that sort of price.

Why not sell your Vauxhall privately - maximising the cash and then buy an elise?

hi yes thought i'd maybe have to pay a bit more, but that's okay, i did advertise the meriva in autotrader, but didn't have any luck yjust yet so thought maybe some elise owner may be looking for a people carrier due to expanding family etc. i purchased the mereva last oct in arnold clarke for my girlfriend, but she wants a mini now and i want an elise s2 for track day use!

would be worth advertising on pistonheads (see classifieds section) under wanted.

But in all honesty, I don't think you'll get much interest.

what about chopping the meriva in against the mini?

yes, which is why i reccomend putting an ad in the classifieds...

BUT.

Owning an Elise... and granted, having never driven a Meriva, I think an elise owner may want, something, say, a touch sportier/more fun as a transition into parenthood..

i bought an 04 Meriva Enjoy with 19000 miles on it last week from a Vauxhall dealer with air con, CD player, alloys one owner, FSH etc etc , for less than £5k.

Keep the Meriva and buy an old S1 until you are sure that a Lotus is really for you. You will get almost all of your money back on an S1 if you decide the quirks of a Lotus are not what you expected.

If you want the Elise for track days and a bit of fun then why not just get a nice S1? Your budget will get you a good'un rather than a scrappy S2.
I don't know where you are but I know of one near Plymouth that's at a used car dealers and I'm sure they would be happy to take a Meriva and cash for the Elise. Well worth looking at the p/x route as dealers are generally struggling to move cars at the mo and sports cars aren't going to be high on peeps shopping list as belts tighten.

Agreed! You could probably get a decent S1 for around 8k this time of year & anyone will tell you that the S1 is definately better for the track than the S2.

hi, thanks for your postings, i liked the look of the S2, but i didn't know they were considered a better track day car than the S2. i suppose i just like the look of the S2 and can prob stretch to an s2 if necessary i thought the s1 was just not a looker in comparison to the s2

tipper, if you can point me the details of that S1 in Plymouth I can have a look if the dealer has a website.

i can probably stretch to a S2. i never drove a lotus, but i was involved in siggle seater racing for a few years and i thought now that i'm not racing this year, the lotus either s1 or s2 would give me the ''buzz'' i had of of being in a racing car. but i just called a friend who works for lookers the biggest dealer in the country excluding arnold clarke and he said business is down and as you said there are probaly loads of dealers deligheteed to move a sports car and would be happy to take meriva

the lotus either s1 or s2 would give me the ''buzz'' i had of of being in a racing car
The S1 Elise would be closer in giving you that racing car 'buzz' factor - It is a rawer drive, whereas the S2 is more comfortable, quieter (with standard 'zorst wink) and easier to get in and out of, an everyday drive. Not to say that the S1 cannot be driven everyday - The majority of S1 owners here, including me, use them as an only car ... smile Best to give both the S1 and S2 a test drive and see what suits your needs. You'll probably have to stretch a little further than £11K for a sorted S2 though. I also doubt any Elise owners would swap for a Meriva unless it had a VXR badge on the back ... and even then I wouldn't be too sure tongue out

Best to sell the Meriva privately and make as much cash as possible thumbup

Just for the record,

I bought an '02 plate S2 three weeks ago for £10.5K

It's got 58k miles on it, and is totally standard. It had new pads & discs and new tyres so I knew I wouldn't have to spend any money (Quite a few hundreds) on obvious consumables for a while.

I figured the miles weren't an issue as I could have spent £13-14k on one with 30-40k miles and still got bills for stuff going wrong.

My limited experience is that you may need a few bits that are known problems on S1 & S2, Head gaskets (£400-500), alternators (£100-£200) etc, but nothing too expensive that will surprise you.

I didn't consider the S1 as I'm a hairdresser and it wouldn't go with my image whistle, but I agree with the suggestion that an S1 is probably a better trackcar, but not as easy as an everyday car.

Happy hunting.

yes think i need a test drive in an S1 and S2, before i decide for sure.

so if anyone can offer me a drive in either just a lap or two would do i'd be grateful.

if anyone is going to a track day in the coming weeks im based in manchester/liverpool area, but i'd have no problem driving to a circuit outside the area.

i was in anglesey a few weeks ago(rained very very heavy like i'd never seen b4) but drove my friends golf gti turbo and there was a few lotus there but i hadn't decided to go for a lotus then, its only in the last few weeks that i've decided its the car for me.

i was thinking of buying an S2 for track day use only and putting it on a trailer to take to track days, but would i be better off just getting it insured and driving to the circuit?

i'm worried if i damage it at a circuit i'd have no way of getting it home and the less milage the better too when i come to reselling it.

it seems alot in terms of wear and tear to spend a whole day thrashing a car around a track to then drive it home for a few more hours when the metals need a rest and need to cool down!

i've already heavily smashed my friends golf heavily on my first track day, the conditions in anglesey were the worst possible ever with circuit covered in water, they were going to cancel it so lets say i was mortified when it was a friends car!

and im worried if i smash the lotus i'd be walking home so\ am i better getting a trailer?

Have you thought about a Westfield or Caterham if you are planning on a track day toy? Not hugely expensive to buy, cheap to run, easy to repair and can be driven to and from the track ...

£6,400 with 2,000 miles ... Yummy yummy! biggrin
