Its about time I learnt to ride I think. Got some holiday to take off, abotu to move into a house with a nice garage.. smile

So, I have ridden mopeds before when I was 16.. I am 20 now and 21 in the dreaded October in terms of bike licensing..

So what do I do.. I know the first thing I need is a CBT..

After that I should imagine doing the bike test is the thing to do..(before it changes in oct I have heard)

Then I ride a 125 or whatever.. and when I hit 21 I can then go onto the DAS if I want to, which allows me to ride anything?

My question is..

Is it just like that..

CBT> test> ride 125 till 21 > DAS ??

I am not saying all I want to do is jump on a r1 or anything, just would be nice to have the option to ride any bike.

Do I require lessons like in a car? or is it all combined in the various courses?

I live in west london, where is best to go to get started?

Sorry for these questions, butI dont find the DVLA site very eay to navigate..

What kind of cost will I face in terms of courses?

Depending on the number of days, you're looking at 450 to 550 quid, if you want to do it on a 500 - which you do.

Budget for kit, remember. I'd point you to Heine Gerrick - or however it's spelt..

I am 2o right now though..

If I read it all right.. I have to do it on a 125 and then when I hit 21 in 6 months I can do the accelerated access.. Does this mean I pay twice?

Or what?

er no...

do restricted access now and have a bike limited to 33bhp for two years, after which it becomes an un restricted licence

or

do restricted access now, re-do test once you are 21 on a bike over the minimum power rating, then ride what you want, though if it was after oct it would be new das not the current version.

Oh right.. so theres no way for me to do it on the current test is there..

Wtf is accelerated access then?

Its just another test.. on a bigger bike.. that you pay the full whack for again?

What a joke.

So yes.

I have read some more, it seems this so called "accelerated learning" is another full practical test on the 45 bhp bike.

But if I did it I would have to do the new one.. which would be pointless as I may aswell just do the new one and get the DAS straight away..

Or I could do the test nowish and wait two years.. but thats a long time..

Any similar situations?

What would you do? brave the new test?

If it's tougher, it can only mean you need to learn more, which is never a bad thing. the test has been toughened up for a reason, i guess.

Your right man, I am thinking do my CBT soon.

Buy a budget 125 rs aprilla or something get to grips with that and then go for it when I am 21 in oct.. then see what I think bike wise then smile

Sound a good idea?

yes accelerated access is upgrading the restricted licence before the two year "probation" period is up as they have become over 21 and are now eligable to take the test on the more powerfull machine

It's six months before the new test comes in, do it now and get some summer ridin in, (if we have one), don't imagine you'll do much ridin over the winter? alternatively wait and brave the new test... or it's the 125 route

new test - longer, harder, more expensive and needs to be taken at one of the new super centres

But would I dont get a choice do I...

Because as said above if I do the accelerated access when I hit 21 which is oct 19th then by default is it the new test?

Hi there,
I live in west london too, paid approx 600 for the DAS. If you are ok in riding a restricted bike, then I would save yourself some money and do the A2 course and ride a restricted bike, rather than do two separate tests.
I hear the Aprilla 125s (which look nothing like a 125 other than the exhaust) are meant to be a laugh anyway, just running costs are high.

I am thinking just bite the bullet and do the DAS in oct ( the harder one )

Then on the other hand I think do it in the summer, wont ride much over the winter and in a couple of years I would be onto a bigger bike... But its knwing I may get bored of the 125 and two years is a long time.
