I'm looking to buy a used convertible (currently have an old-but-good XK8 coupe) and I went yesterday to look at a '02 XKR drophead and was shocked by the loud noise of the idling engine. Admittedly it was in an enclosed space (showroom) but it sounded so much louder on tickover than my non-supercharged engine that I walked away fast. I do like the thought of an XKR and its lovely sound on acceleration but I don't want to give up the whisper-quiet idling and cruising comfort that my XK8 gives me.

So, I would be grateful to know if this loud engine is typical of a supercharged V8 at idle. If it is, I will confine my search to the 'normally aspirated' model.

What kinda noises? might have a split egr pipe, common on later xkr's, simple job to do, not sure cost of the part mind...

Nothing specific - just a standard tickover noise but a lot louder than what I'm used to. Bit like my GF's diseisel.

could a couple of things none serious, i've had a couple of things replaced on my car, the aux belt + tensioner if worn (or out of alignment) can make the car much noiser at idle. also but probably less likely the supercharger belt if worn can also add to the noise.

depends on how many miles the car has done and if any of the parts had been replaced at any point in the cars service history.

It should be just as quiet as you XK8. It can therefore be the timing chain tensioners which maybe on there way out - £1500 to change/ or new engine.(I had a 4.0ltr XKR which clattered a bit but was just fine). Or worn supercharger bearings, or simply the serpentine belt bearings have worn?

How many miles?

Could possibly be a problem with the belt idler wheel bearings.

See what y'all mean about the chain tensioner. It's scary enough to make me buy only from a Jaguar dealer with a full 12-month warranty... especially since I'm mechanically clueless. This car had covered 45k miles but I won't be buying it.

Can you let me know your budget and I'll let you know what you should be buying and what the pitfalls maybe with the ages of cars you are looking at/

Sure - I could stretch to £25k cash but would be happier to pay less. I would like a convertible, around 2003, with as low mileage as possible. The only must-haves are a good Jag service history and a recent service and MOT (which is how I'm selling my 97 XK8).

Ahh the world is you oyster for that money........................

There is so m uch choice, what are your must have optional extra's or are you happier to have a low milage car in the right colour/milage/history and sacrifice the extra's??

Must say I bought my XKR from a JAg dealer, and car had full Jag service history, plus the Jag warranty.

Believe me, onlynik, I have been looking at Jag dealers but the local ones seem to have run down their stock of used convertibles. Must be a sign of the times...

OK, got the pics to load this time. Yes, it looks sweet and I've emailed the owner. I always _think_ that I want black but I've viewed a couple of black cars and any slight damage seems to show up like stars in the night sky... But if they're really pristine, and kept that way, they do look lovely.

Don't worry about, for a few hundred quid you can get your paint back to being mint. My 2007 XKR was a demo and had horrible swirl marks, but after some specialist treatment by a proffesional detailer, it is blemish/swirl free. After that just wash with the 2 bucket method and take your time and it will stay perfect.
