Here's an article about Ferrari's new nose, and apparently no one was supposed to know about it. Looks like they could use some battening of hatches.

As Massa was two seconds a lap quicker on slicks yesterday than anyone else I'm guessing it helps with front end downforce.
I'm also guessing that if Mclaren puts anything similar on its car, it will be back to court and the impartial judgement of that well known moral guardian of F1, Max Mosley......

Motor racing always has been and always will be full of espionage. Anyne see the Sebring 12hrs? They'd taken the Peugeot's engine cover off in the pitlane, cue engineers from Audi, Acura, Porsche and Mazda crowding by the pit wall trying to get a look. You can't legislate aganst it, everyone does it.

Perhaps they shouldn't have used it then.
Not sure if you read the article, but I think they're more shocked that pictures of the new nose were published in a magazine in February, when the first time it was out in public (in full view of other teams, reporters, photographers, etc.) was not until the middle of April.Perhaps they shouldn't have used it then.

It takes high pressure air from around the nosecone and feeds it to the rear wing, to aid rear downforce, apparently. There's a small vent under the front of the nose that draws the air in. It looks like it's there to try and reduce lift generated by the shape of the front body section which is curved in a way that would naturally generate some lift, it looks like it has a wing inside the slot with the exit being either inside the drivers cockpit of further back, maybe running in ducts down the sides of the cockpit.

That explains why i was confused with the wing profile.
It looks like a downforce aid to me, probably meets the 2009 regs as it's not protruding externally to the main lines of the vehicle.So maybe this is what will happen in 2009, the aero will be inside the bodywork, just like the old ground effect cars with their hidden inverted wings made from the bodywork.
I know for a fact its not a new aero device within F1. I know teams at the opposite end of the grid have tested slotted noses in the wind tunnel recently and so I don't think any other team will be completely suprised by it. I suspect (obviously(?)) that Ferrari are the first to actually integrate it in a manner that SIGNIFICANTLY improves aero WITHOUT disturbing the performance of the rest of the aero devices and so have moved onto testing it on track. I guess there's some sort of weight penalty from reinforcing the nose to pass crash tests as well.
I imagine it works basically on the same principal as leading edge slots on aircraft aerofoils. Although on an aerofoil flow is diverted from the pressure side to the suction side; the flow on a F1 slotted nose is diverted from the suction side of the car to the pressure side. Usually you want as much flow going underneath the car to feed the underbody and create low pressure. The slotted nose must take some of this air away and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the underbody? I guess it must supply drastically improved flow towards the rear wing to compensate for this - probably by energising the boundary layer over the top surface of the car and therefore decreasing the chance of separation.

Hopefully the next race will be wet and all the system will do is spray wet rubber particles from the track all over their visors..lol
