I'm getting too familiar with this commute... there's a blind left sweeper and I've always ridden it on the center line to get good visibility and taken it at a speed where I've always felt I could stop in time should the need arise and today it did... lorry stationary in the road on the center line waiting to turn left. Slam on the brakes as hard as I dare as I'm turning left and the bike is moving and I stop just in time down from 60 (cough) so the plan paid off. It was definitely one of those life affirming moments I thought as I accelerated off again as the adrenaline starts to work its way up my back. I think I'll give myself a tad more leeway next time though hehe.

Sounds like one of those moments that emphasize the difference between fast road riding technique and track technique. Well done for taking the line that gives best visibility around the bend rather than the ‘racing line’. You stopped in time which shows you were riding within your/the bikes/the conditions limits.

Ride safe and enjoy

I think it was you that convinced me on a conversation on here a while back to use my back brake (in addition to the front) to slow down from speed when I was convinced it did nothing. If it was you then I owe you a beer on this occasion... cheers beer.

You're in one piece and still riding. That's enough for me.

There isn't one... stopping on this occasion was just a close run thing so thought that getting too familiar with one's regular commute/route might be an interesting thing to chat about...

...taxi!!!

i hit a pheasent on the DRZ the other week ...it flew out real low and straight into my front wheel...chopped its head off and left wing !!! eek (i went back to check it was dead and not wounded in the road) no drama i just had to wash all the guts and bloody of the wheel rim and spokes at the garage before getting into work

i nearly hit a badger on saturday in the car

i nearly hit a mountjac yesterday, it ran out infront of me with its fawn behind it..lucky i ride steady through the woods so plenty of time to stop

if it was boring it would be no fun

ride on mate smile

Agreed 99.9% of the time my commute is predictable and I know where I'm likely to get other road users doing strange things or likely to be stopped etc.. its that 0.1% of the time where you hadn't ever expected something to happen a particular way or someone pulls the most idiotic thing that catches you out. I had one of those 0.1% moments last Dec, that has now mentally been added it to the list of potentially expected behavior in that area now. Essentially I've changed my position in the road approaching the problem area and am on the look out so it can't ever happen again!
