Can anyone help me please?
Last weekend i got a rear drivers side puncture. It did not seem to be totaly flat but i felt the car unstable at the back and pulled off the motorway to check hence the discovery of the puncture. Using my compressor i managed to inflate the tyre and drive to the nearest garage to check the pressure and put some more air in it. I then drove to the next garage to check things again. In between these garage hopps the car felt wierd at the back but the tyre looked to be ok, but i noticed that the wheel seemed to be closer to the wheel arch than the one on the other side. I have already been through the process of changing the rear wheels to front wheels as was designed with the reduced spacing compared to the Tuscan etc. So the car has 4 front wheels fitted but the drivers rear wheel is definately i good 12-15mm further out to the side of the car.
Can anybody confirm if this is normal as i have been advised by the AA man that the rover MG's had offset rear wheels and he suggested that this may be designed this way. My conern is that i have not notced this before and since getting my rear wheels changed i think i would have noticed it before now.
Thank god i was only doing 70 when it let go!
I look forward to your responces.

This is a wierd one to work out Andy. The way you've described it, implies that you thought you had a puncture because 'the back end felt a bit wiered/unstable'. And even though the Tyre looked OK it still felt wierd, and now all of a sudden you notice one of the wheels is futher out. Does the car feel OK and back to normal now that you have had the puncture repaired? If it still doesn't feel right I'd get the car jacked up asap, check you have no play in the wheel, and then check everything else.
IIRC the offset for standard 17" RL's is 41mm.

It's the body mould. I'd put money on it.

I have been told that there were two body moulds used, I'd be interested to have this substantiated by ex-factory people, the two moulds differ apparently.

I have just fitted new tyres on mine and the rear O/S seems to be fit within the arch better than the N/S, as has been illustrated by the fact that the N/S is rubbing the arch. But, this does seem to be the opposite of yours. scratchchin

Having just rebuilt all the suspension I'm 100% happy that that's all as it should be.

Hi.
I have 18" spiders on mine to. The offside rear sits about 10mm further out than nearside, most noticeable when viewed from the rear. I also get slight rubbing on this. I thought it was maybe due to the hand built nature of the car that the bodywork may be slightly different each side.
I haven't had the car too long and still getting used to it, but will get the alignment checked to make sure, drives superbly though and doesn't feel "wrong".

thanks guys,
the tyre was completely destroyed, the inner wall looks like some one has taken a stanley knife to it i.e. a clean cut all the way round even through the reinforcing wires. the car is currently jacked up at the rear with both wheels off as it was my intention to get 2 new tyres anyway. So i have not been able to do a road test yet. just waiting on the tyres comming into stock.
i have had a bit of a Knocking comming from the rear and assumed it was some bushes or the like which again i was going to get done during the next service / MOT prior to Les Mans. Everything seems to be in order with regards to the suspension i.e. solid when grabbing the brake disc and giving it a good shake (or trying to).
i am wondering if the wall of the tyre has given up during the first period of deflation then with air in it perhaps it was not as strong as the other tyre hence the wobbly feeling. that said i did get a scare when i noticed that the wheel seemed to have moved to the outside and when the tyre blew out i thought that the suspension had collapsed or something!
it woud be helpfull if somebody could confirm though if the offset is normal at the rear, not that i am doubting any of the comments above.
thanks again.

If you want to check. Find the centre line of the car rear axle, and measure out to each side from that point, drop a plumb bob down from the hubs as a true vertical. make sure the car is level when you do this, again based on chassis, NOT bodywork, they distances from centre to hub WILL be the same, the body, however, will be different.
