Recently when driving the cerb i have had the smell of exhaust gas coming into the car especially when cruising at around 50mph. Last weekend i took it to a local garage and they spent 2 days and 500 quid of my hard cash on taking the exhaust and manifolds off and re-sealing everything. On the drive home the smell was still there giving me a headache, so back to the garage it went for more investigation. The analysis so far is that the gas may be circulating at the back of the car and getting drawn in through either the boot seal, or more likely the gap (filled with foam) between the bottom of the rear window and the bodywork?
Does this sound likely and has anyone else had a similar problem / solutions?

I think you'll find most Cerbs suffer from this to some degree. If its not that its smelling of petrol.

Open both windows and drive faster wink

When the manifolds were removed were they checked for cracks. Mine are cracked and I get exhaust fumes in the cab. Like Fubes says I tend to open the windows and boot it. New manifolds are planned. I find it hard to believe fumes are entering via the boot or rear windscreen vent. The air pressure caused by the forward motion of the car is sufficient to pop my windows out of their seals. I can see how exhaust fumes in front of the cab could be join the airflow via the man leaks points but I can see how fumes exciting the pipes would be drawn back into an already pressurised cab. Then again I know stuff all about fluid dynamics.

Dont know if they were checked for cracks? And i thought the same re the vent at the back. I am planning to put some gaffer tape over it tonight and have another sniff.
Dont you just love gaffer tape!

If you use a non TVR specialist they will struggle to diagnose stuff like this.
I woulndt put gaffer tape over the holes personally.

Wouldn't suggest taping the vent as, depending on the age of your car, there is probably insufficient cabin ventilation in the first place.

can vouch for an element of this more so in the Summer. Don't have many problems now I've owned the car for 12 months. Keep the engine bay and pipework clean and oil free. Check oil breather pipe as that weeps. Mine verges on the spotless. You may have some drips of oil getting on hot components and it does get very hot under there. So a hot oiley vapour can have the same effect - dry mouth. Slight dizziness. £500 quid ! Oh dear.frown

That stick looks very useful! I do have a slight oil leak from the gearbox and on inspection there is a bit of residue on one of the cats. It doesnt smell like oil though, and really does smell of exhaust! But you are absolutley right about the symptoms....

I think de-catting makes this happen?

How? I'm curious to know this theory.
I have the same problem in my Cerb, and coming home from a blat with your clothes smelling of exhaust fumes is not on.

I thought it was cracked manifolds that caused this. confused

My griff used to do this and I fixed it by adding a length of boot / door seal to the return lip on the bootlid itself.

The std Griff set-up does not seal at all along the back edge of the boot adding the extra seal so rubber pushed onto rubber fixed this.

I have to say my 98 cerb did not have this problem

I know this doesn't help, but I've only ever had this when the cat bypass pipes were blowing at the connections.

A quick tighten up sorted mine.

Mine pongs a bit, but I know my manifolds are cracked, so I'm assuming that's why.

Hum, decatted my last exhaust system and didn't have the problem. Got the full SP, decatted system now and don't have the problem. Cracked /leakign manifolds would be the obvious first guess.

My old Griff suffered from these fumes. At the time Fernies said it was because the tailpipes where too short and the fumes where zooming up the back and then sucked into the boot. They did a temporary fix (which solved the problem so didnt take it any further) of filling the void between boot and cabin with expanding foam. Cheaper than a new exhaust smile

Thing is the boot is vented by some holes facing the diff, and you need to vent the cabin at speed to help prevent internal pressure bowing the windows out.

So I would say blocking the path from the cabin to the boot is a bad idea.

Later cars had extended tailpipes which may help a bit
