At work without the bible............
Discussion
OK, here goes........and pardon the "technical" speak.
Turn lights on 1 turn, headlights light up. 2nd turn, lights stay on but no change (Main beam?) Flash headlights also works. (Dip?)
Found fuses.....no diagram to show which is which ?!!!
If this is a relay problem, I'm presuming that the relay is gonna be in the least accessible place possible ??
Oh great, I'm gonna have a fun afternoon.......

I guesing thatthe first position is sidelights, the second is haedlights. The flash is High-beam, so it could just be that dipped beam has gone - so can you try one more things - turn switch to second position, and then put the lights to high beam.
Dipped fuse should be (checks book) - the dipped beam fuse is the fifth from the left (15 amp), the relay for these is top row second from left.
I'd try the fuse first, and if no luck with that then the relay.
Good luck,
Mike.

Checked lights as above, ie 2nd position and high beam works ok.
Will head out and try and get a fuse later......fingers crossed and thanks Mike.
Will reciprocate should the need arise
Paul - in case it's any help, I listed the fuses and relays in this thread, but theory and practice differ very widely in my car and, I suspect, most : www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=42735&f=8&h=0&hw=fuses+relays

should be a fuse layout diagram in your car's handbook ... given the electrics seem to have gone through a certain (large) number of changes, the handbook that came with the car your safest bet for an accurate descrptioon of the fuses and relays
It is good to see there is a optimist out there... Misguided but still an optimist!

Aahhh yes, the handbook that came with the car.......that would be the one, on the shelf, in the office, upstairs, next to the Bible, at home !!!!!
OK.........last night managed to prove the fuses OK (the handbook and the bible were exactly the same diagram........and matched with the car !!!!! Is this a first ?)
How do I get hold of the relevent relay ?? What is it off ? Spoke to my local dealer and they don't stock 'em and would have to see the car to get one.
Any assistance gratefully received, had to drive home from the TVRCC on sidelights with the occasional full beam......most entertaining on those lovely country roads !!

I said "safest" not "safe"

Cheers gents.......did notice the relays seemed similar so will try swapping round later.
What if that doesn't solve the problem though ? Is there anything else that it could be ? I refuse to believe both bulbs fail at exactly the same time !
Sorry about all the questions.....
I'm not the most technically minded person (complete dunderhead) but MOT looms and failure is not an option.
Steve, quick observation for you, re the above comment on my technical prowess, your book/ bible is easy enough even for me to follow. My post MOT project is the indicator repeaters and indicators being changed to clear/ white lenses which I have already checked in the bible and am willing to give a try !!
Cheers again...........Great work....
