Hi,

I'm about to set up a system to take credit cards (office based) and wondered who you are using.

I've spoken to my business manager at Lloyds (card net) but am ideally looking not to have to pay the initial fee for the rental of equipment, which is 250, setting up a new company and keeping costs low and and all that.

Can anyone recommend.

Thank you in advance.

Talk to Adelante inMaindenhead about their mobile phone (and web) based CC doings. No need for any terminals.

What about paypal they have some merchant services might suit until you reach the point where it's cheaper to user Cardnet.

OK this might not be suitable, but you should seriously consider google checkout if you (or your customer) are online at the point of receiving payment and can take the card holders registered address. It might take slightly longer than a PDQ, but if you do any online marketing through adwords it is essentially free - at the moment.

Oh and another tip, dont hire a PDQ from Lloyds. Buy your own off eBay if you are trying to save money!

We've been with Streamline for about 4 years although we bank with Lloyds TSB but I think Lloyds Cardnet were too expensive with set up fee etc. when we first looked around. It seems from the OP they haven't changed. We decided to buy our own PDQ machine rather than renting a machine but we still have to pay line rental of £15 a month.

I contacted Barclays the other day who quoted me no set up fee but you have to rent the terminal from them although it was only £15 a month which is what I'm paying now after I bought my own machine.

+! for Adelante. We use their MobilePOS. Java applet installed on the phone handles the transaction anywhere you can connect to the data network, and gives immediate authorisation. Our network pays a flat fee for transactions whether credit or debit card - we looked at Streamline, but with the volumes we put through it would have worked out more expensive.

Don't worry about the PDQ costs instead look very careful at the card handling charges. If your processing transactions in the thousands it can cost you escpecially on Corporate Cards.

The Frederation of Small Business have a good deal. I am paying 1.98% for mail order corporate Credit Cards and about 30p for Debit Cards. I use Protx as the processing Network.
