We are definitely at the end of the Golden Age of Motoring. Pendine was on my list, and I finally got there in 2004 just as they closed it for safety reasons.

Next on the closure list will be Nurburgring, TT races, trackdays, LeMans...

I really better get on and tick these boxes before it's too late. frown

Oh, ffs, honestly?

I mean, why?

It was a right of passage, now cruelly taken away from generations of young 'uns, gleefully perched upon their pater's seat, wilfully hurling around and dreaming of exotica...

Modernity and the crushage of desire, hope and incentive.

Hateful, mealy-mouthed dictats from the resentful green eyes of a thousand little labia-sponsored sts.

It is. However I am led to believe the ban has been ignored on occasion.

So were you previously allowed to drive your car at speed on the beach?

Four other record breaking runs were made on Pendine Sands between 1924 and 1927; two more by Campbell, and two by Welshman J.G. Parry-Thomas in his car Babs. The 150 mph barrier was decisively broken, and Campbell raised the record to 174.22 mph (280.38 km/h) in February 1927.

Yes it's all but closed to cars. But then it's a beach, with kids playing football and dogs running around so what did you expect?
The museum's still there and open during the summer.

Doubt you'll get onto it unless you've got a key, a crane to lift the concrete blocks or an amphibious car.

Kids, footballs and dogs all basically congregate within the half mile around Pendine village, and even there I've never seen it remotely busy. If you drive a mile or so down from the village, the beach is always virtually empty and chances of hitting anyone or anything are nil; I taught my g/f's son to drive on there when he was about 8 years old.

If I remember correctly, the 'safety reasons' for which it was closed were nothing to do with kids, dogs or footballs, anyway... it was because the winds and tides had undermined the end of the concrete slip which formed the main access to the beach, so there was a 4 foot drop off the end onto the sand, some mornings.

The guys who did 150mph on bicycle tyres must have had serious balls, though - fastest I ever went was around 100, at which speed the natural ripples, ruts and depressions in the sand made life very interesting indeed.

The first time I ever slid a car was on Pendine sands - an Austin 3 litre automatic. I guess I was 10 or 11 years old. I can still remember my Mum's exclamations from the back seat - Dad just said that I was going a bit fast for the way I turned the steering wheel!

I drove the Pendine Sands back in 1973 in my Fiat 124 coupe - wonderful memories! As I remember at the eastern end of the sands was an Army firing range, and in the sands a sign had been erected stating "No cars past this point due to danger of unexploded bombs".

Now THAT would be health and safety!!

It still is a firing range and more people than you think walk beyond the village. It's only been closed a couple of years.

I drove there not long after the Top Gear episode with the 6 Series in it. I was lucky enough to be driving a 6 series demo at the time.

It was closed, I was gutted. The Mrs and I went for a walk, and continued the rest of our road trip, which included some great Welsh roads up to the Lake District, then further north into Scotland(over a few days of course), so it wasnt all bad.

For My Sins I was once working in Pendine, in charge of the entertainment complex for the holiday park.

The one and only saving grace was the £275 520E I bought for dog walking on the Sands.

F@@K walking the dog, wasting tanks of fuel going sideways in the BMW shed was never ending fun.

Shame the health and safety mups have taken away all the small pleasures in life.

THREAD RESURRECTION

Is this still the case? Is Pendine still closed to the public?

I heard somewhere that the beach has been opened to the public again but have heard nothing definite. Does PH have the answer?

I believe they were testing an electric car with regards to a record attempt the other weekend - think it was mentioned in last week's Autocar

So it may be open to the public again? Awesome. I'm in Swansea and fancy a spin up there but I'm not feeling a wasted journey, the search continues...

I thought Top Gear were part of the problem in that they made the place famous again after they featured the beach in one of the supercar tests ( BMW 6 series, XK jag an 911 iirc) following which every man and his dog wanted to go and play.
