Peeps

How much interest would there be in a 6 speed conversion service for a T5 box (used in most TVR's)

I'd imagine the parts involved would be:
A new or modified end case
Modified layshaft
Modified output shaft
6 speed gear pair
New 5th/ 6th synchro hub
Modified selection mech

Probably about 1.7-2K to make with your box taken and exchanged for a 6 speed one.

Well the usual reasons

Lower revs on the motorway, or you could drop the back axle ratio or tyre size and then get better acceleration with same top end

there is an advert in sprint for changing t5's to a six speed box......i considered this whe i changed to s t5 box.... considering i didn't know how much the t5 change was from the lt77 i didn't look any furthet into this.... just as well as T5 conversion not as cheap as implied

I'd sooner have a lightening quick old RWD Ford 4-speeder.

No fluffed changes in those days. driving

Aye, but me 1650 pre-crossflow Angle box was a bugger for smashing the 2E boxes, and it was a hell of a squeeze getting 'em in and out.

I remember trying to get the box back in one Christmas eve. Up on ramps in the snow, in the street, with me mates bird stood on top of the back of the motor. Was an ugly sight I can tell ya. Not to mention rolling a scavenged and rotted Cortina 1600E onto its side by hand with long pole in the middle of a field to rescue a box from it. Please don't get me started on breaking 3.7 diff's and bending half shafts. Those were the days. Mind you, it was a very bloody quick in the dry proper built hot rod Anglia. Undriveable in the wet. Hence bent drive shafts laugh

I think it would be a worthy mod. However I dont have enough cash at the moment for such a thing. But it will probably be something I would be interested in within the next year.

Would I pay £2k plus labour to take my perfectly good box out to just to get a 6th gear?

No.

Especially if the exchange box was just modified, not fully rebuilt and guaranteed. I might give a good box and get a worn one.

However, if the exchange box was fully reconditioned and I needed a gearbox rebuild anyway it would be different.

The labour of fitting and costs of rebuilding would be there anyway. I would probably pay the extra. Provided it was of proven reliablity.

What would make the difference in the decision would be the speed of gear change. If the modified box changed much slicker and quicker then it would become a must have.

I don't want an SMG box. I like the character of manual cars.

The shortcomings of the boxes slow change becomes increasingly significant as the times in each gear becomes less, yet the time between gears stays the same.

As the cars get better tuned we could use a slightly lower 5th and a 6th that's higher than standard 5th.

Ultimately I could get a 6th gear by fitting an LS engine. I could put the £2k for the 6 speed conversion towards that.

Add all the costs of tuning the RV8 and it makes sense.

Don't know about adding another gear, the 5th is undersized as it is. To add another gear for 6th would mean reducing the 5th in size to allow another cog, then 5th would be smaller and weaker than it is now. Unless the gears can be made of something alot stronger.

I mailed these people http://pendleburyservices.co.uk/sl/Pro-Master-Deve...
they have a six speed sequential with the right pattern for a Cerb, havn't had a reply yet though.
