Just bought rFactor, where to start?

Is it worth doing a lot offline, or should I just get my head round the silly GUI and get into some online matches? Haven't even read the book, just set up the wheel and lost a few bit of paint in offline races. 
Are there regular PH players who wouldn't mind a n00b joining in and learning a bit? My tag is Scumball

You can race offline but I find its more fun to race against real people, although racing americans who are more interested in crashing than racing is sometimes frustrating.

Most of the downloads you are going to want will be on that site.
We are currently doing the RACE mod on various UK tracks in the PH league.
I dont think there would be any objections from you joining the league races, as long as you promise to drive clean
But be warned its quite competitive, so practice will be required.
As for other things to try online.
The Megan trophy mod is popular, so you can race any time day or night. Some servers are full of crashers, so beware.. but this will improove your defensive driving technique. They also tend to use the stock tracks, which saves some downloading

Otherwise just go online and see what mods are popular and choose one you might enjoy and download it.
You may have to download tracks as well. This is the thing that annoys me about Rfactor the most as many servers are running tracks you need to download and its sometimes hard to find out which ones you need.
Rfactor is a great game and you should have lots of fun with it.
The main problems I have with it are the online game finder and the friends search thing,... neither of which work perfectly..
But the game is frequently updated, so it may be improoved in the next update.

Finished 2nd in my first online race just now, using standard cars. - Mine was much slower than the winner's and I pitted to repair some damage and still clearly beat the rest of the field.
Don't rightly understand! - Have been playing LFS for years on and off, which is why I don't really get the GUI. - Is there no class system to the cars to restrict race entries?
Also I can't feel the limits of grip at all through my DFP... Anyone else have one and how have you got the FF set up?

That's all setup by the server choosing which classes are allowed to enter.Means you can have if you want, F1 cars against Sportscars and Trucks or more realistically proper mutli-class GT racing. But of course you can limit the races to one class of car only.
Try an offline race using the All cars all tracks option and on the OPPONENTS tabs of the track page choose the cars you want to enter. If you have lots of cars installed.
Well my man your in for a lot of fun! forget GT5, the best racing is to be had on your PC. Get on Rfactor central and get your tracks and mods downloaded, i would advise going for the Hall of fame tracks and mods first, then take your pick from what you fancy.

Cool, added the Megane pack, had a few laughs...
Downloaded a lot of other stuff from the Hall of Fame, but now when I try to play I can only have the BMW E21 320... - And I can only play the 1979 F1 tracks...
Tried uninstalling the BMW pack and it's put my whole installation back to standard so I can't even see the Meganes now. - Bloody confusing.
It's like you install the 1979 F1 pack and you can only play that exclusively, same with the BMW. - It even plays about with the intro and menu music and installs all kinds of sensors, add-ons and configuration.
Bit disappointed, TBH. - Was having a lot of fun in the Meganes even though I was consistently dead last and now I may have to start all over again. :'(

Then you change the mod in the options back to whatever you want and when you restart rfactor the original intro/menu etc.. are back again, the modified menus and whatever else only get loaded when you choose the mod that uses them. If you remember to change the mod before quitting then you will always get the original orange menus back again.Anyone willing to write their mods/extras downloads to a DVD? - Most of the downloads are through very slow, limited allowance 3rd parties, so trying to get them all over a short period is somewhat "grr".
