Wider wheels on a griff 500...
Discussion
I want to get wider wheels on my griffith 500 model year '96, what's the widest wheels with diameter 15'/16' front/rear i could go with? without any mod needed to the fiberglass? stock should be 7.5x15 front and 8x16' rear...i have at the moment 7.5x16 front and 8x17 rear...should the backspace be diff if i go with wider wheels? Thanks/Giu

You'd have difficulty buying suitable tyres in 15" size.panic said:

I would have said that stock should have been 8.5" at the rear. Are you aware that stock was 7 "f and 7.5"r?panic said:

You could add 0.5" to those widths, probably 1".panic said:

Not theoretically but people usually decrease the ET a few mm (3 to 5) to give a greater track.panic said:

Cheers. Why do you want wide rims? Are you going to drag race? Show?JR said:

IMHO opinion plenty of 15" tyres about it just a matter of playing about with sizes... ok I'm running a non spec 205/15/50's... there is scope to play around changes in sizes which donnot affect overall performance drastically ... and who are to say TVR got it right

Reducing backspace (and then pulling wheels out a bit for a greater rack) lets say of 3 front and 5 rear (and getting 0.5' front and 1' wider wheels rear), won't I have then problems of rubbing against the outer side of the wheel wells?
Nope, those dims of 8" f and 9" r would be fine for the wheels. The reduced front ET plus the .25" wheel width either side of the centre line (9.5mm extra externally, 3.5mm extra internally) would still be within the 225 front tyre fitment original arc.
Similarly for the rear the reduced rear ET plus the .5" wheel width either side of the centre line (17.5mm extra externally, 7.5mm extra internally) would still be about the same as the 245 rear tyre fitment original arc - it's 2.5mm wider and has not been found to be a problem. 255/265 tyres are regularly fitted.
I fitted 18x9"ET40 and 17x8"ET25 to mine, and ran 265/35 width rears, and 215/40 fronts,no problem.I also know someone who ran 235 on the front of his very same wheels. It drove superbly and felt incredibly well planted,i thought.I'll be doing the same again with my new one.
