Cologne 2.8 tuning
Discussion
Hello, did somebody try to improve the Cologne 2.8L by changing the standard cylinder heads for a pair of stage2 / stage3 and a V6T3 camshaft, as proposed by Burton Power?
Is it worthwhile to do the job or maybe is it better to swap for an other engine?
I really would like to stay with my S1, but 20-30HP increasing will be welcome.
Thank you.

hi, I looked into having the engine rebuilt with all the various mods after working it all out it was only an extra couple of hundred to rebuild and convert to 2.9 cossie power giving alot more power than the rebuilt 2.8.
on this note I'm dropping mine off tomorrow for the conversion and have not thought about clutch and flywheel. Is the 2.8 flywheel adequet and what would be the best clutch, I'm guessing a sierra cosworth would be the one, any ideas?

I have an S1 which had a very sad 2.8 engine, only putting out 110hp. I looked at the options, and a mate of mine had a BOA cosworth, which I paid him £500-00 for, with all ancillaries including the ECU, which I still have. I could have bought a bit cheaper, but I knew the engine, and 2 years later its still going strong (thats done it!).
What the conversion costs, depends upon what you want to compromise. At the end of the day, I spent about 3K plus the engine. The exhaust headers were £550-00. the Emerald ECU was £800-00. I then chose to replace the orignal crap exhaust, which cost another £500-00. A new altenator and special mounting were required, also a new radiator and revamped cooling system, and the list goes on and on of small items.. The fly wheel by the way is a straight swap, and infact is a bit lighter, so improves the engines blippyness. I used the orignal clutch, but it`s an uprated item, and not that old.
The main thing, apart from the performance (which is in another stratosphere), is the smoothness of the engine. The whole car just feels so much more together.
Would I do it again? Do`nt know. I would seriously investigate trying to fit a modern V6, which would be lighter and more fuel efficient. The difficulty however, is that the cars are not worth a whole lot these days, and it seems daft to me ouring thousands more into a depreciating asset, but thats just me getting older and boring.
The other sensible option, is to fit a standard 2.9. You still have to consider the ECU wiring, but it would be more strightforward, and there are other tuning options for these, ie turbo`s. The Cosworth heads are quite big, so restrict underbonnet space.

Does the 2.9 Cosworth engine fit in the S? Could have sworn I read somewhere it didn't.on this note I'm dropping mine off tomorrow for the conversion and have not thought about clutch and flywheel. 800 pounds for the emerald ecu? Thats alot of money, I'm just having the grannie one rewired. The flywheel is a straight swap - thats what I thought. Also been advised standard clutch won't take the power so looking at a sierra cosworth clutch. I'll keep tabs and put price of conversion on here. I've already spent 775 on engine and 922 on manifolds, altrnator kit and engine strip/ rebuild (no work needed)
I've seen clutch kit for 120 so thats 1817 so far. I've paid well over top for engine but that was due to condition and probably saved in the long run as not needed to have any work done. Hopefully its not too much more.

Yes, the Emerald ECU is £800-00, but that includes the rolling road session to set it up. It is a lot of money, but its a recognise market leader, and if I choose to modify the engine futher, the ECU can be reprogrammed easily, or I could fit it to another project etc. With hindsight, If I had known someone with the knowledge to rewire the original, but hey, the engine measures 224hp, and 243ftlbs of torque, with a very flat torque from 3200 to 5300rpm, so I am not complaining, certainly not as much as my diff, which came from a Sierra 4x4 (lsd).
