Hi all,
First post here. I'm thinking of buying a Monaro HSV and was wondering if anyone can point me to a good buyer's guide? I've seen a low mileage 2004 car in Yellow which I may consider. I'm a bit hesitant about the Yellow though - residual value especially. Any advice would be appreciated - what to look out for etc.
Thanks

Black is the only way to go mate! fastest as well... smokin

Im sure other with the older CV8 models will advise you best but its not a car you should buy if you worry about residuals IMO due to the cost of fuel going through the roof and the fact these things have thumping great V8's in front. Not a good combination to anyone but a fan.

Red is the fastest. I would agree that yellow is.......ahem...........a questionable colour for any car but if its a good one go for it and adopt a macho walk wink Get it RAC inspected and if possible looked over but an expert company, I would use Monkfish.

Never mind the residual value, these things are serious value for money given you would need to spend Ferrari or M5 money to even get close enough to read the rear number plate. You will love it.

That`s a bit of an elitist comment

Yellow is a great colour IMO and if, when the time comes to sell, someone is looking for a yellow one you are made.
Just about the only thing I`d say is check the carpets for water leaks and the brakes for judder.

Cheers,
I was hoping to but at around the 13k mark and assume I'd keep it for around 4 years. Depreciation of about 50% during this time wouldn't be a disaster. The car I've seen has such low mileage that it makes me start to wonder why it hasn't been used. However if it's a good car then it'll still be a low mileage car in 4 years - sort of assumed that Yellow would hold it's value less well though.

I've just been trying to decide which road tax band it falls into - would I be right in thinking that a 2004 car is for this year going to fall into band F (210 quid) and next year band M (440 quid!).

As for am I a fan - well I've driven one now so yep. Which leaves some serious maths to do.

just seen the other comments....

Thanks for the advice.

I drove the car I question at Monkfish yesterday and it seemed tidy. They've (promax) looked after my 944 for a few years now but it's time for a change. I figure with accepting the running costs of a 22 year old car for the past 5 years I can afford to run one of these.

Was pulling your leg a bit about yellow, I dont think any colour would devalue them, just limit the potential market? They do look very good with black wheels, just not my choice smile

Drove a 944 for 5 years with a bad back so I'm sure the nice armchair front seats will help me regain the macho walk.

Just click on 'Quote' and insert your reply under all the text.

Very best of luck with it, I would have no hesitation from buying anything from Roger or Andy, they have built me a monster HSV VT2 Turbo and have used them for a long time too with no complaints whatsoever smile

Having just bought one myself, and not being particularly well off, my advice is to test drive one. You'll know straight after if you want one or not. The fact that you like them has made you interested enough to at least check it out. I was well aware of the depreciation as I picked up my 06 plate for almost half its original cost. I most certainly could not afford something like a TVR with it's massively high service costs. Yes the constant fuelling is annoying, but I can afford to keep it topped and to be honest, I love it so much I don't mind the expense. I am glad I got it at a dealer and not private though. The warranty has definately come in handy for getting those niggling little things done without busting out the wallet. I could have saved a couple of grand going private though as mine has high mileage.

I have a quicksilver (had it since early Feb), and although I do like it, I would quite happily have yellow, or any other colour for that matter cos the car is just fantastic. It would be nice if the car held it's value better, but at the end of the day, when the car eventually goes, I can say that the enjoyment was worth every penny.

Good luck finding one.

Edit: oops, just read that you've driven one already

Thanks everyone,

I'll give it another better look over at the weekend hopefully. As for the modding fairy - it's such a step up in power from my 944 that I'll resist for a while hopefully. Doubt my insurance could take it either.

Be warned, they cost a bloody fortune to run if you use it every day. Average MPG for mine is about 17 which equates to £74 to fill up and 240ish miles. The people on here who claim 30mpg are talking bollox or they drive everywhere at 55mph.

Depreciation is another killer - my CV8 cost 21k to buy just over a year ago and I have since spent about £7k on mods. Just about to replace the rubbish standard brakes at a cost of another £1.8k

Be warned, but if you can afford it you will love it.

Odyssey blue is the best colour, black is common and looks shit when it's dirty (sorry guys)

Around town mileage wont be good. But if you use them to eat motorway miles 30mpg is within grasp. My vxr8 is sitting on 25.2mpg after 1000 miles.
Im hoping exhaust etc will bump it up some more...

Strangely the more power I have the more I am willing to pay for fuel it seems smile

I do prefer the blue, its a shame they didn't do a VXR version.

I echo the fuel comments. As a daily driver you do chew through the fuel, although (no bullst) I get 20-22mpg and I drive like a tit.

Personally I would go with a VXR, the HSV upgrades are worth the extra especially as there is not much in the price these days. Get an 04 and you join an even more exclusive club wink.
